SPEAK test: At Drexel University, all non-native English-speaking teaching assistants are screened for language proficiency through an oral proficiency examination called the SPEAK test—an institutional version of the Test of Spoken English. Scores on the SPEAK test are matched with a recommendation for a teaching assignment commensurate with performance on the test. For more information, see SPEAK test standards for instructional assignments, or information on services available for International Teaching Assistants (ITAs).
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): A test used to measure an individual's ability to understand English. Nearly every college and university in the U.S. requires international students to submit a TOEFL score for admission. Requirements vary from university to university, so it is best to check with the institution you wish to attend about their particular score requirements.
International TOEFL scores can be submitted for admission to any U.S. university. The test is not given at Drexel University, but there are test sites in the Philadelphia area. For more information, visit the TOEFL website or call 1.800.GO.TOEFL for an appointment.
