Dr. John Via Named Director

Dr. John Via, Director of Engineering ManagementEffective October 1, 2012, Dr. John Via, P.E., has been appointed Director of the Engineering Management Program and Associate Dean of Engineering - Online Programs.

Dr. Via is a Drexel alumnus and graduate of the Engineering Management Program, receiving both a M.S. in Chemical Engineering and his M.S. in Engineering Management in the early 1990s. He received his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Virginia, a Master of Engineering Science from Lamar University and a M.S. Manufacturing Systems Management, a Master of Liberal Arts and a Doctor of Engineering in Engineering Management from Southern Methodist University.Dr. Via also completed the Program for Management Development at Harvard Business School.

Dr. Via started teaching as an Adjunct Associate Professor in Engineering at Texas Christian University and assisted with the start-up of their undergraduate engineering program. He was appointed an Adjunct Professor in Engineering Management at Southern Methodist University in 2004 and has taught in their Executive MS Engineering Management Program for the past 8 years. His areas of interest include manufacturing, automation, engineering management, flexible packaging, technology transfer and supply chain management. Dr. Via has also served on advisory boards for the Engineering Management department at Southern Methodist University and for the College of Engineering at Lamar University.

With more than 28 years of industrial experience at a variety of companies, Dr. Via's career includes six years of engineering experience in the chemical industry with Goodyear Tire & Rubber and Fischer & Porter Company, and 22 years of engineering and management experience in the pharmaceutical industry with Parke-Davis, Merck & Co., Inc., and Alcon Laboratories. Most recently, he served as Vice President of Manufacturing responsible for global manufacturing of all of Alcon's surgical products.

Dr. Via will succeed David Reifschneider who did an excellent job as interim director of the Engineering Management Program since January 2012. Dave has now resumed his appointment as Assistant Director.
