Dr. Steven Weber Named Department Head of ECE
June 8, 2018
We are proud to share that the College of Engineering has appointed Dr. Steven P. Weber to the position of Department Head, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), effective June 8, 2018.
Dr. Weber served as Interim Head of the department since May 2017. He has been with the College since 2003, and was promoted to full professor in 2015. The ECE Department Head Search Committee cited Dr. Weber’s technical expertise, depth of knowledge, academic achievements, and affable leadership style as among the reasons for the appointment.
During the search process, Dr. Weber stressed that ECE's many areas of internationally recognized excellence in research, strong tradition of leadership in engineering education, and commitment to its students comprise the bedrock of our excellent reputation. Among his top priorities are streamlining and updating the undergraduate curriculum, identifying new research opportunities, and proactively marketing the department’s strengths in order to raise awareness externally and increase student enrollment.
"I'm humbled and honored to have been appointed as the ECE Department Head," shared Dr. Weber. "Having served as the Interim Department Head this past year has strengthened my conviction that our department's core strength is the wonderful people that comprise our community: our students, alums, staff, and our faculty. I'm proud of the initiatives that our department has made over the past year, and I'm excited by the opportunity to continue working on them, and others, over the years to come. I want to thank the members of the ECE Department Head Search Committee for all of their extensive efforts this past year, Dean Palmese for his valuable mentorship and unflagging support, and all of the members of the ECE Department faculty and staff who have given me support in so many ways. I look forward to working with [incoming] Dean Walker on her vision for the College of Engineering, and with the ECE Department faculty and staff on making our department the very best it can be. My door is open, and I welcome your suggestions and feedback."
Dr. Weber received his BS in electrical and computer engineering from Marquette University in Wisconsin. He earned both the MS and the PhD in electrical and computer engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Weber also serves as director of Drexel's Isaac L. Auerbach Cybersecurity Institute and as an advisor to Drexel's CyberDragons. He lives in Germantown with his wife, Erin, and their children, Sophia and Eliot.
Congratulations to Dr. Weber on his appointment!
