Message From the Department Head

Steven Weber

Thank you for your interest in the Drexel University Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE).

We live in a technological age, and technology is at the heart of what we do in ECE – we design, develop, and advance modern technologies in order to improve our world and our quality of life.

The scope of technologies that ECE helps advance is incredibly broad -- machine learning, wireless communications, bio-imaging, green energy, Internet of Things, cybersecurity, nanotechnology – just to name a few.  In short, any technology, platform, or system that requires computers, embedded systems, or circuits to operate was almost certainly designed and developed by an ECE engineer.

How do ECE engineers possibly understand, much less design and advance, such incredibly complicated systems?  By the engineering design process.

The engineering design process starts with an understanding of the foundations – scientific, mathematical, and computational.  These foundations are the bedrock on which technological disciplines are built, e.g., the technological discipline of digital circuit design is built upon the mathematical foundation of Boolean algebra and the scientific foundation of semiconductor physics.  Finally, these technological disciplines are leveraged in the design of technological solutions for a wide array of societal areas – technologies to aid our health, provide energy and power to our world, connect us to each other and the Internet, and automate tasks better-suited to computers than humans.

The Drexel ECE Department is a community of students, faculty, and staff dedicated to educating the next generation of ECE engineers, and to conducting research on the next generation of technology.

We teach the engineering design process to undergraduate students, with bachelor of science (BS) degrees in both computer engineering and electrical engineering, and to graduate students, with both master of science (MS) and doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees.  Our MS degrees include an MS in computer engineering, electrical engineering, telecommunications, and cybersecurity.  Our degree programs offer incredible flexibility, enabling you to customize your plan of study.  For example, you might pursue a minor in nuclear engineering, computer science, mathematics, or computational engineering.

The Drexel cooperative (coop) education program, available to both undergraduate and graduate students, gives our students the opportunity for invaluable experiential learning, which in turn gives our graduates an incredible advantage on the job market, on account of the fact that most of our students graduate with eighteen months (three six-month coops) of on-the-job training.

As a research university, we offer an unparalleled opportunity for ambitious students to engage on cutting-edge research projects with our world-class faculty, including opportunities for undergraduate, masters, and doctoral students.  This engagement is facilitated by innovative research programs like Students Tackling Advanced Research (STAR), Vertically Integrated Projects (VIP), and the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) Grand Challenge program.

Our faculty perform impactful research on state-of-the-art technologies – we publish in top-tier journals and conferences, we develop widely-used software libraries, we establish patented intellectual property, we receive competitive research funding from the government, military, and industry, and our Ph.D. students go on to be technical leaders in their fields.

Please look around our website for more information, and don’t hesitate to contact us for more information.

Thank you for visiting the Drexel ECE Department.
