International Student Placement While we do not offer an official English placement exam, incoming International students are assessed on their proficiency in English primarily by their total TOEFL score and combined writing and speaking TOEFL subscores. Students who demonstrate high proficiency in English are placed into ENGL 101 in the fall. Students who demonstrate mid-to-low proficiency in English are placed into an English as a Second Language (ESL) section of ENGL 101 in the fall. ESL sections are designed for non-native speakers. Students who demonstrate low proficiency in English are placed into LANG 180 in the fall with the opportunity to take ENGL 101 in the winter. For more information on LANG 180, please visit the English Learning Center's (ELC) website.
