Population Health Spotlight: Levering the role of higher education anchor institutions

In the last decade there has been significant growth
in interest on how anchor institutions, including colleges and universities,
impact local economies and development. The presentation will review some of
these efforts and discuss their potential for improving population health and
health equity in historically disenfranchised communities of color.
Speaker: Hortensia Amaro is Dean's Professor, Social Work and Preventive Medicine and Associate Vice Provost, Community Research Initiatives at the University of Southern California. Dr. Amaro’s research has focused on alcohol and drug use and addiction among adolescents and adults; the development and testing of behavioral interventions for HIV/AIDS prevention; substance abuse and mental health treatment for Latina and African American women and incarcerated men; alcohol and drug use among college populations; and behavioral interventions for HIV medications adherence. Dr. Amaro has served on the editorial board of the American Journal of Public Health and other leading publications, and on several Institute of Medicine committees.

The Population Health Spotlight is an opportunity for Drexel students, faculty, and the Philadelphia community to hear about exciting public health research and practice that is happening locally, nationally, and globally with a focus on improving population health and eliminating health disparities. The Dornsife School of Public Health at Drexel University was founded on the principle of health as a human right and the recognition of the importance of social justice as a means to achieve health for all. This series has hosted speakers from academia, practice, and community organizations dedicated to improving health.
