Environmental Studies
It is of real importance to train students to play a future role in reforming our society around the concepts of environmental stewardship and sustainability.
The Environmental Studies program is an interdisciplinary major designed to ready students for employment or graduate studies in the growing fields of environmental policy and justice, environmental communication and urban planning. The core principal of this program can be summed up by the term sustainability: which is defined as a commitment to conserve finite natural resources, while developing smarter social, political and economic systems that ensure fairness in the distribution of these resources for both current and future generations. The curriculum is designed to give students the skills they need become leaders in the fields of environmental policy, communication and urban planning. With relevant vocational skill sets that would serve public agencies, as well as private firms and non-profit organizations.
Drexel University, like a host of other Universities around the country, has recently elevated environmental sustainability in its research, service and educational missions. The result of this is a campus-wide student led effort called Drexel Green. In addition, Drexel is committed to state-of-the-art urban systems research through its Drexel Engineering Cities Initiative. The University also provides the opportunity for graduate study in the areas of Urban Environmental Policy, as well as a Master’s of Science in Public Policy. Our faculty and students are also very involved in campus organizations such as the Drexel Sierra Club Coalition, as well as larger efforts undertaken by the City of Philadelphia and the Delaware Valley Region around sustainability. Our students are encouraged to get involved with these and the range of other activities and organizations on campus, in addition to public, private and non-profit organizations for internship or Drexel co-op opportunities.
