Career Opportunities
Many corporations, schools and health-care institutions are using ethnographic field techniques and qualitative methods in order to understand their markets and clientele, or for that matter, their own organizational structure. The Anthropology major prepares students for employment in these areas, as well as for further graduate work in anthropology, public policy, law and other social and behavioral sciences.
Drexel Co-op for Anthropology
A key part of the program is Drexel’s prestigious co-operative education program, in which students alternate periods of classroom study with periods of professional work experience. Anthropology students can participate in a one Co-op Option (Four Years): includes one six-month period of full-time employment.
A Few Drexel Co-op Position Titles:
- Assistant to Researcher into Consumer Preferences
- Community Development Intern
- Health Care Human Resources Assistant
- Volunteer for Nonprofit International Aid Organization
Here are some of the companies that have hired Drexel students as co-op or full-time employees:
- Comcast Corporation
- Congreso de Latinos Unidos, Inc.
- University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)
- University of Pennsylvania
Potential Careers
- Anthropologist. Studies the origin and the physical, social, and cultural development and behavior of human beings — whether in developing areas or highly industrialized societies. Some compare the behaviors and customs of different cultures. Some investigate the origins of the human species and the way the species has evolved. And some study archaeological remains to understand the demographics of ancient cultures and the impact of forces such as disease on those cultures.
- Ethnographer. Applies scientific method to record and describe human societies. Some ethnographers are researchers who work in institutions of higher education; others work for companies seeking a thorough understanding of their customers and potential markets. May also work for nonprofit organizations interested in community needs.
