Drexel University

Drexel University was established by Philadelphia financier and philanthropist Anthony J. Drexel in 1891, with the first incarnation as Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry. The cornerstone of Drexel’s career preparation model has been the co-operative education program, which is still an integral part of the educational experience. Through it, students alternate periods of study with periods of full-time professional employment, providing valuable professional experience. The institution's curriculum and organization of its academic programs have evolved to include nine colleges and four schools. Approximately 25,000 students are enrolled in Drexel University’s 14 colleges and schools.

Drexel University offers a unique academically rigorous program, providing undergraduate students with up to 18 months of professional experience before graduation. Drexel University is on a quarter system, and most students attend a five-year undergraduate program. The Drexel culture and pace is reflected in the needs of the Counseling Center and potential doctoral interns will find a culturally diverse, rich training experience in a well-utilized center. Interns are expected to conduct short and long-term individual therapy, couples and group therapy, as well as conducting intakes, triage, participate in the afterhours on-call rotation, walk-in hours, consultation, outreach and workshops.  Interns will also provide supervision to doctoral externs as well.

Counseling Center

Drexel University’s Office of Counseling and Health is housed within the Division of Student Life, as part of Enrollment Management & Student Success. As part of these divisions, the Counseling Center plays an essential role in making sure Drexel’s students receive additional support as needed in order to make campus life a safe and valuable experience. The Counseling Center’s mission is to support the academic goals of Drexel University through assisting students with personal challenges that interfere with their academic progress, and to promote and foster the academic, personal, and interpersonal development of Drexel students. The Center values diversity and is committed to being an inclusive space for our students. Our clinical work is guided by the ethical and practice standards of our professions, with the goal of providing the best services possible. Psychological services are both remedial (including crisis intervention, assessment and referral and counseling/psychotherapy) and preventive (including psycho-educational workshops, outreach programming and peer training). The Counseling Center seeks to be fully integrated into the university community by providing consultation to faculty and staff regarding student concerns, serving on university committees as well as teaching and training. The Center employs a multidisciplinary team of psychologists, a care coordinator, and a psychiatrist. A variety of theoretical perspectives and areas of expertise are represented among the staff. The Counseling Center works within a short-term treatment model, but trainees may carry a few students who may require longer-term services.
