Introduction

NATO-Advance Study Institute (ASI)
Nanoengineered Nanofibrous Materials

September 1-12, 2003
Antalya, Turkey

Call for Abstracts

The ASI on " Nanoengineered Nanofibrous Materials" will contribute to the dissemination of state-of-the-art knowledge about the application of nanoengineered nanofibers, including nanotubes, nanobelts and nanowires, in energy and electronic industries. The underlying physics and chemistry of the phenomena responsible for the unique properties of nano-sized one-dimensional materials will be analyzed and discussed. Carbon nanotubes and polymeric nanofibers will be addressed primarily, but the whole range of nanostructured fibrous materials will be covered.

The first objective of this ASI is to discuss the current research covering a wide range of nanosized materials, their physical and chemical properties. The second objective is to give an opportunity to outstanding researchers from academia and industry to gather, along with students, for discussing the achievements in this field and outlining future directions in terms of technological developments and product commercialization in such fields as electronics, personal protection, biomedicine and sensors.

This ASI will emphasize the connections between the physical, chemical and processing data for nanosized materials. An important goal of this ASI is to familiarize students with the most recent developments in this branch of nanostructured materials and their potential use. This ASI will bring together scientists from basic and applied research areas to initiate interactions aimed at translating basic research achievements into engineering applications.

Invited speakers, from NATO and Partner countries, will present some of the most recent developments in physics, chemistry, and technology of nanoengineered materials. We have selected a broad range of excellent speakers having international standing and representing uniformly NATO and partner countries, as well as university, industrial and government research laboratories. A larger number of lecturers have been invited from NATO countries with the goal to train and motivate scientists from partner countries to explore the area of advanced anofibers. Partner country scientists are expected to make more than 50% of the ASI students thus ensuring a well-balanced group of attendees. Recent advances in processing and use of nanostructured nanofibers will be covered. The latest experimental results will be presented in contributed short papers and posters. Two hours will be allocated for each invited lecture with ample time for discussion. Contributed papers will be given 20 min. time slots. Two poster sessions, which will also include posters from graduate students, will be organized on two of the evenings. Poster presenters will be given 5 min after the lecture to advertise and briefly describe their posters.
