We are pleased to recognize the recent grants, publications, presentations, awards and honors of the members of the College of Arts and Sciences.
Appointments
Pamela Geller, PhD, associate professor of psychology, was elected to the inaugural executive board of the National Association of NICU Psychologists.
John Medaglia, PhD, assistant professor of psychology, was selected as a fellow in the Psychonomics Society, one of the primary societies for general scientific experimental psychology in the United States. Fellows are chosen from members who demonstrate clear evidence of independent scholarship, active engagement in methodologically rigorous and theoretically interesting research, and an imminent national/international reputation for excellence in the psychological sciences.
Kevin Moseby, PhD, assistant teaching professor of sociology, was elected to the Science, Knowledge and Technology Council of the American Sociological Association.
Awards and Honors
André Carrington, PhD, associate professor of English, won the 2018 Comics Studies Society Article Prize for his article "Desiring Blackness: A Queer Orientation to Marvel's Black Panther, 1998-2016," American Literature.
Rebecca Clothey, PhD, director of the global studies major and an associate professor in the School of Education, received the School of Education’s Faculty Award for Research for Mid-Career Faculty. The award is presented to an associate tenured or clinical faculty who has demonstrated a high level of excellence in research and scholarship.
The Climate, Health and Home project, a community education project co-directed by Alison Kenner, PhD, assistant professor of politics, was nominated for the 2019 SustainPHL Climate Hero award.
Jason Orne, PhD, assistant professor of sociology, received an honorable mention for the 2019 American Sociological Association Sexualities Book Award for his book “Boystown: Sex and Community in Chicago.”
Grants
Stephanie Manasse, PhD, assistant research professor at the WELL Center, Adrienne Juarascio, PhD, assistant professor of psychology, Evan Forman, PhD, professor of psychology, and Jichen Zhu, PhD, associate professor of digital media in Westphal, were awarded a $300K Coulter-Drexel Translational Research Award for the project “Using Virtual Reality and Sensor Technology to Enhance Treatment for Binge Eating.”
Jason Weckstein, PhD, associate professor of biodiversity, earth and environmental science, was awarded a $913K grant from the National Science Foundation for his project “Comparative Cophylogenomics in a Highly Replicated System: Tinamou Lice.”
Presentations and Media
Evan Forman, PhD, professor of psychology, gave an invited address to the American Society of Nutrition at its 2019 convention on “Promising Behavioral and Technological Innovations in the Treatment of Obesity.” He also appeared on NBC10 and ABC6 news to discuss the development of OnTrack, a smartphone app that learns to predict and to prevent lapses from weight loss dietary prescription.
Mimi Sheller, PhD, professor of sociology and director of the Center for Mobilities Research and Policy, gave the keynote address at the Mobilities and Transnational Iceland conference at the University of Iceland in Rejkavik. She also presented at the American Association of Geographers’ annual meeting in Washington D.C. and at the Small Axe Symposium at Columbia University.
Publications
Tatyana Livshultz, PhD, associate professor of biodiversity, earth and environmental science, co-authored a paper that was identified as one of the top 20 downloaded articles published in the American Journal of Botany in 2017-2018. The article is titled “Evolution on the Backbone: Apocynaceae Phylogenomics and New Perspectives on Growth Forms, Flowers, and Fruits.”
Gary Rosenberg, PhD, professor of biodiversity, earth and environmental science, co-authored an article describing a species of shipworm, Lithoredo abatanica, whichis the first shipworm known to bore in rock rather than in wood. The article, titled “A Rock-Boring and Rock-Ingesting Freshwater Bivalve (Shipworm) from the Philippines,” was published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B and received press coverage from outlets such as the New York Times and Science.
