Mimi Sheller, PhD, Elected President of the International Association for the History of Transport, Traffic and Mobility
September 29, 2014
Mimi Sheller, PhD, Professor of Sociology and Director of the Center for Mobilities Research and Policy, has been elected President of the International Association for the History of Transport, Traffic, and Mobility (T2M). Drexel University just successfully hosted T2M’s Annual Conference, from 18-21 September 2014, with over 130 registered participants from more than twenty countries. The T2M conference has become the major venue for exchange of research spanning transport history and mobility studies.
The International Association for the History of Transport, Traffic and Mobility was founded in 2003 to stimulate and support studies of the movement of people, things and ideas in all periods and societies in the past. This includes the linkages between transport systems and a wide range of social and cultural factors – e.g. politics and public policy, labor and business, science and technology, tourism and travel, media and the arts, and crucial questions of sustainability and the environment. Today transport history shares inter-disciplinary interests and methods with mobilities research, urban studies, geographies of mobility, and the study of media and communication. T2M also publishes the Journal of Transport History (two issues a year), the journal Mobility in History (once a year), and offers discounted subscriptions to Transfers: Interdisciplinary Journal of Mobility Studies, of which Sheller is an Associate Editor. The association invites participation by anyone sharing an interest in its activities and publications; please visit T2M.org for membership information.
