Dean's Seminar: Interpreting for Refugees in U.S. Hospital Clinics

Wednesday, January 27, 2016

3:30 PM-5:00 PM

Susan Bell, PhD, head of the Department of Sociology

In the United States, more and more people are speaking more and more languages. About 25.1 million people report limited English proficiency (LEP); at one time or another, most of those people, if not all of them, seek medical care. Hospitals are required by federal law to create standards for interpreter services and to provide medical interpreters free of charge for all patients who need them. What are hospitals doing to meet this requirement? How do they provide language access to refugee patients? What interpreter services do hospitals offer? Susan Bell, PhD, will address these questions through a study of outpatient clinics at a hospital in Maine.

Learn about the exciting research being done by faculty in all departments of the College of Arts and Sciences! The College of Arts and Sciences' Dean's Seminars are free and open to the Drexel community. Light refreshments will be served.
