"Using Diatoms for Reconstructing Environmental History of New Jersey Coastal Wetlands"
My research focuses on developing diatom indicators of environmental conditions in mid-Atlantic coastal wetlands. I developed diatom-based sediment nutrient and salinity models and apply them to several sediment cores collected in New Jersey marshes. This study revealed a diatom community shift beginning approximately 300 years ago. Diatoms indicate accelerating nutrient pollution and sinking of marshes, especially pronounced in recent decades.
