Sociology

Sociology is the study of societies, social life, social systems, structures and networks, and the social impacts of human behavior. Through systematic and critical investigation into the social processes that shape societies, sociologists can study a broad scope of subject matter, ranging from intimate groups such as families to large organizations. Sociologists seek to understand factors that shape social life such as class and power, gender, race, inequality, social norms, or social practices in science, technology, the environment, sports, education, media, deviance and crime, and human rights.

The Sociology Program at Drexel University is intimate and closely knit, with a strong and dedicated focus on social justice, social activism and social change. Our faculty research interests include:

  • Environmental justice in disadvantaged communities
  • Environmental movements
  • HIV/AIDS education in West Africa
  • Emerging technologies in postindustrial economies
  • Media activism
  • Aging and access to healthcare
  • Cybercrime and community surveillance
  • Urban Policy
  • Criminology
  • War and social justice
  • Inequality
  • Religion
  • Critical social theory

We provide individualized attention to students, and support students to develop both academic and   marketable skills that they will carry with them beyond their lives at Drexel. Students graduating in sociology have developed skills in critical thinking, research methods, data analysis, writing, statistics, public speaking and computer literacy. Our students have gone on to advanced study in sociology or have careers in urban planning, market research, and business.
