Sigma Pi Sigma
The Physics Honor Society
Drexel University is proud to have its own Sigma Pi Sigma chapter. Founded in 1921, Sigma Pi Sigma exists to honor outstanding scholarship in physics; to encourage interest in physics among students at all levels; to promote an attitude of service of its members towards their fellow students, colleagues and the public; and to provide a fellowship of persons who have excelled in physics. Sigma Pi Sigma chapters are restricted to colleges and universities of recognized standing that offer a strong physics major.
Since 2009, the Drexel Chapter of Sigma Pi Sigma has inducted more than 30 undergraduate and graduate students. Each spring, inductees are honored at a banquet on campus with guests including Drexel administration, faculty and alumni. New members receive an official lapel pin, certificate of membership, membership card and a complimentary subscription to Radiations, the official publication of Sigma Pi Sigma.
Drexel undergraduate students meeting the following requirements are eligible for induction into Sigma Pi Sigma:
- Completed a minimum of five full-time quarters
- Completed a minimum of five quarters of physics courses that may count towards a physics major
- Maintained a 3.2 GPA in physics courses
- Have the support and nomination (in the form of a signature) of a full-time faculty member
An email is sent out to students in the Department of Physics each fall with more information and the necessary forms for induction into Sigma Pi Sigma.
