“Career Opportunities in the Pharmaceutical Industry”

Overview: The speaker will discuss the drug development process and how pharmaceutical companies utilize teams of experts with different scientific backgrounds to design development programs and solve difficult issues. Using this multidisciplinary approach to develop new medicines increases the probability of success and helps deliver medicines to patients where the benefits far exceed the risks, and the risks are well understood.

Biography: Dr. Howard Hutchinson is the Vice President for US Regulatory Affairs and Policy and Global Regulatory Intelligence at AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals. He graduated from Drexel University in 1983 with a degree in Chemistry and obtained his Medical Degree from Thomas Jefferson University. He remained at Jefferson for his Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Fellowship training and received Board Certifications in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease. After completing his Fellowship in 1993, he was awarded a Bugher Foundation Award to study molecular cardiology at the Stanford University School of Medicine. His research centered on the study of the effects of natriuretic peptides and the renin-angiotensin system on vascular smooth muscle cell growth during normal physiologic development and following vascular injury.

His career in the pharmaceutical industry began in 1995. Since that time, he has led multiple cross-functional teams in the development of novel treatments for various diseases. He has served as Vice President for US Clinical Research, Global Clinical Head of the Cardiovascular, Metabolism, and Gastrointestinal Therapy Areas and Chief Medical Officer for AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals. Dr. Hutchinson is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, a member of the American Heart Association and the American Academy of Pharmaceutical Physicians. He is also Adjunct Clinical Instructor of Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and serves on the Board of Directors for the AstraZeneca Healthcare Foundation.
