R. Vivian Allahyari Wins Honorable Mention at Discovery Day
October 10, 2014
R. Vivian Allahyari, a 2nd year Ph.D. student in the Garcia Lab, received an honorable mention at Drexel University College of Medicine’s (DUCOM) Discovery Day 2014 for her research entitled "The role of Sonic hedgehog signaling in reactive gliosis". Understanding the process of neural repair is critical to developing therapeutic treatments and improving functional recovery following injury to the central nervous system. Astrocytes have a critical role in responding to brain injuries, yet the molecular mechanisms behind this function are not well understood. Vivian’s research is looking to elucidate these mechanisms by examining the role of Sonic hedgehog signaling in the astrocytic response to brain injury.
