Nutrition Counseling Now Available to All Drexel Students
October 1, 2013 — The Center for Integrated Nutrition and Performance (CINP), a collaboration of the Department of Nutrition Sciences, Drexel Recreation Center, and University Wellness is very pleased to announce that, beginning during the fall quarter 2013, nutrition counseling services will be available to every Drexel student as a benefit of their student status. Students can now take advantage of various nutrition education programs and make appointments for private nutrition counseling sessions with a Student Wellness Registered Dietitian (RD) in the nutrition office located within the University’s Recreation Center.
The list of areas in which students can work with an RD is extensive; the CINP offers counseling on topics from what foods to eat during all-nighters to diabetes education. What makes this program unique, however, is the convenience and individualized attention that Drexel students will experience. Students can easily make an appointment either online or by simply stopping by the nutrition office. “The Drexel LIVE.IT fit campaign creates an attitude and culture of wellness, and nutrition education is one more component now available to all students, to empower them to take control of their well-being,” said Nyree Dardarian, a professor in the Nutrition Sciences Department and Director of the CINP. Furthermore, the Center is prepared to answer any question students might have and can even take further steps by collaborating with the Student Health Services Center to provide students with any additional support they may need.
Dardarian believes that offering nutrition counseling to all students is a key to increasing students’ academic success and to improving retention, since students are more likely to succeed when they are eating nutritious foods that provide energy. “It is our responsibility to give them the resources to make the best decisions,” Dardarian added.
With very few colleges and universities offering nutrition counseling to their entire student bodies, Dardarian is extremely pleased with the progress Drexel University is making in this area. “Proactive planning to ensure the success of each student is integrated into the Recreation Center here at Drexel. I am not surprised by the overwhelming support for the Student Wellness Dietitian,” she concluded.
