Dr. Schmidt joined the faculty in 2005, after working twenty-six years in community behavioral healthcare in New Jersey. She has extensive grant writing and program development experience. As a director of community behavioral health services she has overseen the operations of partial care, residential, case management and family support services.

She is currently on the Board of Directors for CareLink in Philadelphia and is a reviewer for the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Journal. She frequently conducts lectures and workshops for Caregivers, community providers and other professionals. Dr. Schmidt teaches courses in child and family services, psychopharmacology, recovery and relapse prevention, psychiatric rehabilitation and group counseling. Her research interests include the identification of best practices in psychiatric rehabilitation, illness management and recovery and family psycho-education.
