Kathleen C. Ashton is a Clinical Professor of Nursing in the College of Nursing and Health Professions and a Professor Emeritus at Rutgers University in Camden, NJ where she taught and conducted research for 16 years. She has taught graduate and undergraduate courses and is currently Course Chair for the Global Health and Policy Issues course. She teaches in this course, as well as in research and leadership courses. Having served with Project Hope in the Philippines and on a medical mission team in the San Blas Islands of Panama, Dr. Ashton practices as an Advanced Practice Nurse with prescriptive authority on annual medical mission trips to Lima, Peru. In 2008, she was part of a delegation of nurse educators to Jingzhou, China where she taught at Yangtze University.
She obtained her basic nursing education at Mercer Medical Center in Trenton, NJ, her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, her master’s degree from the University of Maryland, and her Ph.D. from Temple University in Philadelphia.
Dr. Ashton has published the results of her funded research in leading nursing and medical journals and serves on the editorial boards of two nursing journals. Additionally, she serves on the boards of various community and professional organizations and has been an invited speaker at regional, national, and international conferences where she has presented her research on women and heart disease and her work in global health. She practices in the area of critical care nursing and serves as a legal nurse consultant in the area of adult health nursing.

Academic Distinctions:Dr. Ashton has been honored for her teaching, scholarship, and service to the community and the nursing profession. She holds the Lindback Award for distinguished teaching, the NJ Governor’s Award for Advanced Nursing Practice for her work in Peru, the NJ State Nurses Association C.A.R.E. Award, the Nurse.com G.E.M. Award and numerous other awards for her service and scholarship.
Professional Society:Dr. Ashton is a member and past officer of the New Jersey State Nurses Association and the American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants, and a member of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, the National League for Nursing, and Sigma Theta Tau International.
