Dr.
Betty Ferrell, PhD, FAAN to be first Drexel DrNP Clinical Scholar-in-Residence
Dr.
Betty Ferrell has been in oncology nursing for 25 years and has
focused her clinical expertise and research in pain management,
quality of life, and end of life care. Dr. Ferrell is a Research
Scientist at the City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte,
CA. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and she has
over 220 publications in peer reviewed journals and texts. Dr. Ferrell
received the Oncology Nursing Society Distinguished Nurse Researcher
Award in 1996. In 1997 she received the National Clinical Research
Award from the Association of Community Cancer Centers. She was
a member of the Expert Panel on Pain for the Agency of Health Care
Policy and Research (AHCPR) and was co-chair of the Task Force on
"Pain in the Elderly" for the International Association
for the Study of Pain from 1994 to 1996. She is Principal Investigator
of a study funded by the American Cancer Society on "Palliative
Surgery" and she is also Principal Investigator of the End
of Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) project funded by the
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. She is a hospice volunteer and also
the chairperson of the Southern California Cancer Pain Initiative.
She has authored four books Cancer Pain Management (1995),
a text on Suffering (1995), Pain in the Elderly
(1996) and the Textbook of Palliative Nursing Care (2001).
We
are indeed honored to have such an eminent scholar as Dr. Ferrell
here at Drexel this summer. Dr. Ferrell will speak at the Inaugural
Doctoral Dinner on June 27, 2006, followed by an address to the
DrNP students and faculty on the 28th. On the 28th she will also
address the Drexel College of Nursing & Health Professions student
and faculty community, teach a doctoral seminar to the 12 DrNP students,
and provide a 20 minute personal consultation to students with a
particular interest in Dr. Ferrell’s work.
