Creative Arts in Therapy: Career Opportunities

Art Therapy & Dance/Movement Therapy

Within the Philadelphia area and across the nation, graduates of our program are known for having outstanding clinical and professional skills. The opportunities for employment in the field of art therapy are constantly expanding. Graduates are hired by psychiatric hospitals - inpatient, partial, and outpatient; nursing homes and retirement communities; schools; prisons; corporations; medical hospitals; school systems; and child advocacy centers. Typically, the graduates hold clinical positions related to creative arts therapy, group therapy, and psychotherapy. They often are promoted to jobs as supervisors and managers.

Our students are taught professional skills in job interviewing, grant writing, and developing a private practice to increase their chances of enhancing their income while providing a valuable service to the community.

Music Therapy

Our graduates find employment in a chosen area within two months of graduation. Most have a position before graduating. In the tri-state region surrounding Philadelphia, there are more jobs available than graduates.

Typically, graduates are hired as music therapists in hospitals, day or community treatment facilities, therapeutic day care, schools, and other short- or long-term treatment settings. Usually, they have the option of moving toward supervisory and administrative positions. Drexel graduates have the option of sitting for the exam to become a Licensed Professional Counselor within Pennsylvania following passing the Certification Board for Music Therapists exam (www.cbmt.org) and completing two years of music therapy work under the supervision of a licensed professional.  This license status may allow for music therapy services, either through an institution or private practice, to become eligible for third - party insurance payments.
