Are You Meeting All Standards: Cultural And Spiritual Care - DUNEI 2013
June 18, 2013
The purpose of this program is two-fold. It will provide the means to integrate cultural
competency as well as spirituality to improve health outcomes in the 21st century. The course will review assessment tools,
effective communication, staff education, and environmental changes necessary to transform the environment, accommodate
patient needs and provide compliance according to laws and Joint Commission standards. Nurse educators have the unique
responsibility to be informed regarding regulations and requirements to assume a leadership role in shaping the culture of
healthcare organizations.
Although initiatives in healthcare have been available to improve cultural competence, health disparities that are unique to
specific populations have been neglected. The Joint Commission has addressed the fact that lesbian, gay, bisexual and
transgender (LGBT) individuals have long faced challenges in accessing quality healthcare and has become a significant public
health concern. All current and future nurses should possess the knowledge, skills and expertise to provide appropriate care to
diverse populations. Understanding specific healthcare needs of diverse populations has been instrumental in the development
of health promotion education.
Many professional and regulatory organizations have recognized the importance of spiritual care as an integral part of daily
life that influences health and illness. Mind, body, and spiritual concepts will be discussed. Spiritual assessment and strategies
will be provided to assist nurses to feel more competent in meeting the spiritual needs of patients. Exploring the spiritual and
religious needs of patients as they navigate through their healthcare experience has demonstrated a significant increase
in patient satisfaction.
