Civic Engagement at Drexel

When people hear about Drexel University’s commitment to its civic engagement mission, they aren’t always sure what we mean. What exactly is civic engagement, and how does Drexel do it?

If you were asked to define civic engagement, the American Psychological Association suggests it is “individual and collective actions designed to identify and address issues of public concern.” But at Drexel, it boils down to being a part of your community.

That’s a defining concept for the University’s Office of University & Community Partnerships: from the moment Anthony J. Drexel laid the foundation for Drexel University, he knew that urban institutions have a unique mission to bring students, faculty and their community together.

As an anchor institution we have made a commitment to the Philadelphia community we are part of. We are a private institution working for public good, and much of our work is in creative collaboration with our campus neighbors. We carry out this mission through our academic and research functions, through our business operations, and through the volunteer power of our students and employees.

President Fry's Vision

If Anthony Drexel were to walk today from the building where the Drexel Institute was founded almost 120 years ago, through our campus, and into the surrounding neighborhoods, would he be satisfied that we are fulfilling our mission as an urban university?

That is the question Drexel President John Fry asked in his inaugural 2010 convocation address. His answer? We must do more. Drexel University has the opportunity to be the most civically engaged university in the United States. Find out more about President Fry’s vision.
