Our goal: promoting affordable homeownership
The foundation for a strong neighborhood begins with homeownership. Mantua and Powelton Village have been home to families since Drexel opened its doors in 1891. Our goal is to maintain the value and history of our surrounding community, encourage homeownership, and continually make
improvements through initiatives, programs, and partnerships. From a home purchase assistance program for Drexel employees to workshops for residents on completing energy efficient renovations, Drexel provides substantial support to neighborhood homebuyers directly and through partnerships with local developers. We are a proud partner of We Are Mantua, a transformation plan that has become the blueprint for our work in the Mantua neighborhood.
The Drexel Employee Home Purchase Assistance Program is one of the most extensive of its kind in the nation today. Established to encourage and support homeownership within the neighborhoods around the University City Campus, the program offers a $15,000 forgivable loan to employees toward the purchase or renovation of homes within defined borders. Drexel also gives our employees who live in the neighborhood a one-time $5,000 home improvement grant for renovations, as well as access to financial fitness workshops.
Drexel works with several partners to maintain and preserve homes in our community. In addition to providing energy audits, weatherization and healthy home renovations for local homeowners, our annual participation in Green Block Builds in Mantua brings hundreds of student and faculty volunteers to work with existing homeowners on each block. In recent years, the initiative has helped to revitalize Mantua and to improve the homes of more than 40 families. In addition, the Dornsife Community Lawyering Clinic provides estate planning services to help families keep their homes for generations.
