Mantua In Action After School Program

Drexel offers Mantua In Action, an after-school program for middle school youth in partnership with Philadelphia Parks and Recreation, Philadelphia Youth Sports Collaborative, and several Mantua groups.   The program provides Mantua middle school students (ages 8-14) programming five days a week, from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. each day, with home work help and a range of enrichment options, from sports -- squash, tennis, lacrosse, fencing, wrestling, and running — to playwriting, arts, and leadership development.  Offered first as a pilot summer program in the summer of 2012, Mantua in Action has over 160 Mantua youth registered for the after school component in 2012-13.   A second summer program will be offer in 2013.

Mantua in Action has strong support from across Drexel.  An innovative component is offered by the Sports Management program, which trains Mantua teenagers and young adults to be “junior coaches” to mentor the younger youth and work alongside the coaches in Mantua in Action.  Drexel students volunteer as tutors for the program.
