Increased Safety Patrols
Drexel University has contracted with University City District (UCD) to extend the safety patrol area around the University City campus and into Mantua and West Powelton. UCD has added 12 new security ambassadors who patrol the expanded community for more than 750 hours per week.
The University’s Department of Public Safety has expanded the security technology infrastructure around the perimeter of the campus, as a way of improving safety and security for the campus and community alike. Six closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and emergency telephones have been installed in the community, and serve as strong crime deterrents. Other safety initiatives include new emergency telephones and on- and off-campus lighting.
Byrne Criminal Justice Innovation Grant
Drexel participated in a Department of Justice Byrne Criminal Justice Innovation Grant awarded to Mt. Vernon Manor, Drexel’s Mantua community partner, to improve public safety in Mantua. The College of Arts and Sciences Criminal Justice Department led project. This grant and the collaboration behind it were critical to the success of the Promise Zone designation.
Drexel and the Powelton Village Civic Association have partnered with the Philadelphia Police Department 16th District to track the number of safety incidents and crime data on the University City Campus. The partnership is designed to increase public safety for students and residents in the areas surrounding the campus.
