Video Analysis for the Characterization of Fly Behavior

CCI Project Lead: David Breen

Project Leaders: Dr. David Breen (CCI), Dr. Aleister Saunders (Biology Department) and Dr. Dan Marenda (Biology Department).

About The Project

The ability to study learning and memory behavior in Drosophila has significantly
increased our understanding of the underlying molecular mechanisms of this behavior, and allows for the rational design of therapeutics in diseases that affect cognition, e.g. Alzheimers Disease. The learning and memory behavior of fruit flies is assessed via human analysis of fly courtship. We have developed a computational approach to fly behavior quantification and characterization based on the analysis
of videos of courting fruit flies; thus providing an automated, time-‐saving and objective technique for memory and learning studies.
