iOTA TO#6: A Research Study of Curation and Stewardship of Technical Data
CCI Project Lead: William Regli
The agencies and laboratories of the United States Federal Government are under increasing pressure and scrutiny to ensure that the data they produce in the course of their efforts is properly stored, curated and stewarded. Future use, verification of current and future scientific results, and even potentially commercial products (with mutual economic benefit) all may stem from data and scenarios developed from that data. The age of “Big Data” is here. There is concern and urgency to ensure that the adoption of proper processes and procedures to ensure the machinery of science continues to progress in this still young century.
Specific to these ends, Drexel and FAA will collaborate, during which scientists, engineers and program management of the FAA and the FAA’s William J. Hughes Technical Center (WJHTC), work together with academic researchers. Expected outcomes are enhancement of current data sets and sources, and a mutually produced “proposed a plan of action”, including a technical architecture which will potentially lead to a prototype, for the establishment of a digital repository serving the both the Tech Center, Drexel, and future users. The basis for this study will be the Open Archival Information System, and the choice of standards for the research usage scenarios.
