About the Project

With support from a Drexel University Career Development Award (2014-2015), Deborah Turner coordinated Center for the Study of Libraries, Information and Society's (CSLIS) inaugural activities in Nov. 2014. These included a formal lecture, titled "Libraries: What is the Way Forward," offered by Joseph Janes, Associate Professor and MLIS Program Chair at the University of Washington Information School (iSchool), followed by commentary from the following Philadelphia area library and information science community representatives:

  • Stacey A. Aldrich, Deputy Secretary, Pennsylvania Department of Education, Office of Commonwealth Libraries
  • Siobhan A. Reardon, President and Directory, Free Library of Philadelphia
  • Adam Townes, Doctoral Candidate researching “Urban Public Library Service for Underserved Groups: A Study of Contemporary Public Library Practice,” CCI, Drexel University
  • Veronica Britto, MSLS, Vice-President/President-Elect, Philadelphia Chapter of the Black Caucus of the American Library Association; Branch Manager, Lovett Branch Library, Free Library of Philadelphia
Funded CSLIS inaugural activities additionally found Janes meeting with alumni, students, doctoral candidates, faculty and CSLIS affiliates.
