College of Computing & Informatics Associate Teaching Professor Alison M. Lewis, PhD and library and information science alumnus MaryBeth Meszaros, ‘06 recently co-authored a chapter in a book that received the 2016 Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Instruction Section (IS)
Ilene F. Rockman Publication of the Year Award.
The book,
titled Not Just Where to Click: Teaching Students How to Think about Information (2015, ACRL), explores how librarians and faculty work together to teach students about the nature of expertise, authority and credibility. It provides practical approaches for motivating students to explore their beliefs, biases, and ways of interpreting the world.
The book is edited by Heather Jagman, coordinator of reference, instruction and academic engagement at DePaul University; and Troy A. Swanson, department chair, library and teaching and learning librarian at Moraine Valley Community College.
The book also includes chapters that bridge the gap between the epistemological stances and threshold concepts held by librarians and faculty and those held by students, focusing on pedagogies that challenge students to evaluate authority, connect to prior knowledge and construct new knowledge in a world of information abundance.
Lewis and Meszaros authored the third chapter in the book titled, "Librarianspeak: Metaphors That Reflect (and Shape) the Ethos and Practice of Academic Librarianship." Their research used the methodology of discourse analysis to explore the conceptual models about faculty and students espoused by academic librarians, as expressed in 550 articles published in two representative professional publications.
Meszros is a 2006 graduate of Drexel’s library and information science program and currently works as a Specialist Librarian in Reference and Instructional Services at Monmouth University Library in New Jersey. Lewis has over twenty years of professional experience in specialized, research and academic libraries, and currently teaches a variety of courses within the Master of Science in Library and Information Science program at CCI.
