Drexel University’s College of Computing & Informatics has opened registration in anticipation of its third annual
Philly Codefest—a two-day coding competition to transform data into real-world solutions—to take place on Drexel’s University City campus on February 20-22, 2015.
Philly Codefest will bring together software developers and designers, professionals, educators, students and entrepreneurs representing diverse areas of the tech community to tackle a variety of national and local challenges.
Teams—formed both before and during the event—will work to produce new software and hardware prototypes and tools using anonymized data in areas such as health, hospital and patient care; government and civic solutions; media and digital arts; data science and visualization; and cybersecurity, among others.
Philly Codefest 2015 attendees will be able to network with fellow participants, sponsors and mentors comprised of leaders from Philadelphia’s tech community. Teams will be judged by a panel of venture capitalists and tech business leaders. More details on prizes, judges and speakers will be announced closer to the event.
Last year’s Philly Codefest featured keynote speakers
Steve Welch (co-founder and managing partner, DreamIt Ventures),
Michael Hagan (chief rockstar/COO, LevelUp) and
Mark Headd (chief data officer, City of Philadelphia).
The 2014 competition, which involved a total of seven team finalists, included prizes such as the Women in Technology Award, Best Hardware Hack, Best Mobile Project, Venture Capitalist’s Choice and a $5,000 Grand Prize.

Drexel has previously hosted hackathon events, such as “Random Hacks of Kindness”—an open source solution effort founded by Microsoft, Google, Yahoo!, NASA and the World Bank.
