BS in Information Technology

The Bachelor of Science Degree in Information Technology (BSIT) focuses on applied information technology with an emphasis on infrastructure rather than applications.

BSIT students learn how to understand and apply core information technologies; approach the application of information technology from a user-centered perspective aimed at meeting the needs of users and organizations in a societal and global context; apply sound methods and approaches to identify and analyze IT problems and design, implement, and evaluate effective and usable IT solutions;  display personal and interpersonal IT career skills, including the ability to work on a team, to communicate with technical and nontechnical people, and to pursue lifelong learning.

The BSIT is offered as both a five-year and a four-year co-op program. In addition to the core coursework in information systems and information technology, the major includes 12 credits towards a minor in business. Only 12 additional credits would be required to complete a minor in business.

The BSIT Program Features:

  • Focuses on IT infrastructure and services, networking technology, server technology, and systems analysis
  • Emphasizes¬†the use of technologies for solving complex problems in computing systems
  • Meets the growing demand for individuals skilled in the management of information technology systems
  • May lead to such jobs as Information Security Engineer, Network Operations Technician, Network Systems and Data Communications Analyst and/or Network and Computer Systems Administrator -some of the fastest-growing careers in the U.S.
  • Five-year program with three six-month periods of Co-op employment or four-year program with one six-month Co-op

BS in Information Technology Program Educational Objectives

Within three to five years of graduating, alumni of the program are expected to achieve one or more of the following milestones:

  1. Be valued contributors to private or public organizations as demonstrated by promotions, increased responsibility, or other professional recognition
  2. Contribute to professional knowledge as demonstrated by published papers, technical reports, patents, or conference presentations
  3. Succeed in continuing professional development as demonstrated by completion of graduate studies or professional certifications
  4. Demonstrate commitment and leadership within their profession and community as demonstrated by professional and community activity or contributions towards society's greater good and prosperity

BS in Information Technology Student Outcomes

The program enables students to attain, by the time of graduation:

  1. An ability to apply knowledge of computing and mathematics appropriate to the discipline
  2. An ability to analyze a problem, and identify and define the computing requirements appropriate to its solution
  3. An ability to design, implement, and evaluate a computer-based system, process, component, or program to meet desired needs
  4. An ability to function effectively on teams to accomplish a common goal
  5. An understanding of professional, ethical, legal, security and social issues and responsibilities
  6. An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
  7. An ability to analyze the local and global impact of computing on individuals, organizations, and society
  8. Recognition of the need for and an ability to engage in continuing professional development
  9. An ability to use current techniques, skills, and tools necessary for computing practice
  10. An ability to use and apply current technical concepts and practices in the core information technologies
  11. An ability to identify and analyze user needs and take them into account in the selection, creation, evaluation and administration of computer-based systems
  12. An ability to effectively integrate IT-based solutions into the user environment
  13. An understanding of best practices and standards and their application
  14. An ability to assist in the creation of an effective project plan
