Hometown: Kutztown, PA
Current School Year: Junior
Anticipated year of Graduation: 2014
Major: Civil Engineering
Minor: Engineering Management
Please describe your study/research interests and why.
The reason that civil engineering appeals to me is that it is inherently a broad engineering disciple. Civil engineers design and build the world around us. Civil engineering encompasses structures, geotechnics , transportation planning and capacity, project management and more. The areas of civil engineering that I am personally most interested in pursuing include transportation and geotechnical engineering.
Please describe your co-op experience. Include where you worked, a brief description of your duties, and what you learned.
My first co-op was with the City of Philadelphia in the department of Public Property. I was a project manager in the public safety division, which meant that I handled city projects in police stations, fire stations, and prisons. I was involved with projects ranging from roof replacements on police stations and fire stations to design of the Philadelphia strategic master plan for prisons. This co-op exposed me to the inner workings of a public agency.
My second co-op was with CH2M HILL, Inc. in their Philadelphia office. I worked in their transportation business group focused mainly on port and maritime projects. I worked both in the office and in the field at one of the job sites at Port of Newark Container Terminal in Newark, New Jersey. While with CH2M HILL I was an intern engineer and worked closely with professional engineers and project managers on all the projects I was assigned to be a part of.
Please describe any extracurricular activities that you participate in.
In my time at Drexel I have tried in involve myself in activities both within and apart from the college of engineering. I am a member of Chi Epsilon (a civil engineering honor society), president of the Drexel chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), a member of the Italian students organization (ISO), and a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.
Explain what you would like to do after graduation.
After graduation I hope to work for an engineering consulting firm and gain the necessary experience to be eligible to take the professional engineers examination and obtain my P.E. license. One of my goals is to act as the resident engineer on a construction project and eventually to become a project manager within an engineering firm.
Explain what you like about Drexel’s Engineering Program.
What sets Drexel’s engineering program apart from other programs is its unique structure. The Drexel engineering program provides students with an unprecedented way to learn engineering both in the classroom as well as in practice while on co-op. A large number of professors at Drexel have a wealth of experience not only as professors but also as practicing engineers and consultants in their respective disciplines. The combination of classroom instruction from Drexel’s faculty as well as experience gained through the Drexel co-op program distinguishes Drexel students from others and provides students with a competitive edge upon graduation.
