Profile: Donald Matzkin was born and raised in Philadelphia and attended Philadelphia public schools. After receiving his bachelor’s degree from Cornell in 1963, Donald spent two years on active duty with the U.S. Navy. He left active duty status in 1965 and returned to Philadelphia, taking jobs with Murphy Levy Wurman, Montgomery Bishop and Arnold, and finally Vincent G. Kling & Associates before co-founding Friday Architects/Planners in 1970 with Peter Arfaa, David Slovic, and Arlene Matzkin. Friday's current leadership is Don and Arlene Matzkin and Frank Mallas.

Notable Friday Architects/Planners Inc. projects in Philadelphia include: Old Pine Community Center; University Townhouses; Central High School Gymnasium, Art Department and Science Department; Calcutta House; Cheshire House; Caton Village.

Other area projects include the Friends' Central School Indoor Athletic Facility in Wynnewood, PA and Burlington Center, regional shopping mall in Burlington, NJ.

Donald’s other notable achievements include serving as co-founder and first board president of the Charter High School for Architecture & Design (CHAD) in Philadelphia and serving as co-founder of the Community Design Collaborative in Philadelphia. He was a faculty member at Temple University for 30 years, and has been at Drexel for more than 20 years.
