Research Day 2007

On April 10th, 2007, the College of Arts and Sciences held its annual Research Day in Behrakis Hall.  Graduate and undergraduate students gathered to set up their posters, which displayed the main points of their chosen research topic, and the discussion concerning it.  Hot food, drinks, and cookies were provided for the throng of spectators that gathered.

Each poster was judged according to the thoroughness of the research, the effectiveness of the oral presentation, and the visual and informational aspects of the poster itself.  The points for each poster, 40 possible points total, were tallied after all the judges had submitted their point sheets.  Honorable mentions went to numerous posters, but three winners were chosen in four categories: Undergraduate and graduate social sciences/humanities, and undergraduate and graduate natural sciences.  The winners were as follows:

Graduate Research in Natural Science
First Place: Ronald Smith
Second Place: Barry Ritz
Third Place: Shaya Honarva

Undergraduate Research in Natural Science
First Place: Jennifer Hillemann
Second Place: Michael Foster
Third Place: Kimberley Kavanaugh

Graduate Research in Humanities and Social Science
First Place: Valerie Weisser
Second Place: Jessica Wolfman
Third Place: Lori Tuscan

Undergraduate Research in Humanities and Social Science
First Place: Kristen Lasher
Second Place: Tom Hoffman
Third Place: John Medaglia

The chosen topics this year included research concerning turtles, the connection between depression and multiple sclerosis, women in sports, topics in chemistry, and topics in world politics as well as literature.  Drexel promises some fantastic researchers for the future.

After the announcement of the winners for Research Day, tickets were also drawn for the raffle; prizes included two $15 iTunes gift certificates, a $25 Gap gift certificate, and an iPod Nano.

When the event ended at 6 p.m., the posters were packed up and the bustling crowds filtered out of Behrakis Hall.  Some of these posters are now on display in the Bossone Auditorium.
