Curator Pick of the Month

dry point self-portrait

Title: Self-Portrait
Artist: Matt Phillips (1927-2017)
Creation Date:
Origin: United States
Medium: Copper plate, dry point etching

A self-portrait by Matt Phillips (1927-2017), an American artist who helped establish the monotype technique. This self-portrait was done in the dry point etching technique, where the artist inscribes the image into a soft copper plate using a sharp pointed tool. Having the printing plate itself demonstrates this technique clearly and is a great way to teach about this process of printmaking.

Welcome to the Collection

Drexel University, initially Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry, was founded on the belief that education should be both practical and cultural—and that art should be not only beautiful, but educational. On that principle, the Drexel Founding Collection—the University’s flagship collection of art—was founded alongside the University in 1891. Today, the Collection remains a resource for historically and culturally significant works of art as Drexel University pioneers a model for the modern, urban university.
