Purpose: to foster innovation and support effective participation of fishermen and fishing communities in the implementation of sustainable fisheries in the US.

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s TB Vaccine Accelerator Program (P)
Deadline: November 26, 2012 by 11:59 a.m. (PST)
Funding: Amount not specified. Up to $20 million will be available over the next three years ($5 to 8 million per year).
Purpose: To develop novel approaches to vaccination against Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), and to develop models of natural Mtb transmission and methods for defining the relevant molecular and biological characteristics of naturally transmitted mycobacteria and of their interactions with vertebrate hosts.

Simons Foundation Autism Research Initiatives- Pilot and Research Awards
Deadline: November 30, 2012 (LOI)
Funding: Up to $125,000 (Pilot); Up to $250,000 (Research)
Purpose: SFARI Pilot Awards are intended for innovative, high-impact proposals requesting support for small-scale projects or early-stage experiments that will build on preliminary data or a prior track record and lead to competitive applications for funding by SFARI or other organizations.SFARI Research Awards are designed for investigators with demonstrated expertise conducting compelling high-impact research on an experimental hypothesis for which, in most cases, preliminary data have already been gathered.
Eligibility: Applicants and key collaborators must hold a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent degree and have a faculty position or equivalent at a college, university, medical school, or other research facility.

Cystic Fibrosis Foundation NIH-Unfunded Award
Deadline: November 30, 2012
Funding: Up to $125,000 per year for 2 years
Purpose: To support Cystic Fibrosis-related research projects that have been submitted to and approved by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), but cannot be supported by available NIH funds.
Eligibility: The application must have been reviewed by an NIH study section and presented to an institute council within 12 months of applying for CFF support. The investigator should not be receiving other funding for this work.

Wells Fargo, National Fish & Wildlife Foundation- Environmental Solutions for Communities

Funding: Up to $100,000 over 18 months
Purpose: To support highly visible projects that link economic development and community well-being to the stewardship and health of the environment.

National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE)

Funding: average grant range $100,000-$150,000
Purpose: The grants program seeks innovative research and research-based development projects that can make a profound contribution to the field of financial literacy. Inquiries are encouraged from disciplines in fields as diverse as behavior, economics, neuroscience, sociology, psychology, marketing, finance, education, change theory, decision sciences and others.
Eligibility: Project outcomes must be capable of achieving traction and measurable impact with audiences such as financial education intermediaries, researchers, practitioners, decision makers, and others who can achieve effective outreach to a target population with an unmet financial literacy need or to the general public.

Burroughs Wellcome Preterm Birth Initiative
Deadline: December 3, 2012
Funding: Up to $600,000 over 4 years
Purpose: To bring together diverse interdisciplinary groups with expertise in genetics/genomics, immunology, microbiology, and proteomics along with the more traditional areas of parturition research such as maternal fetal medicine, obstetrics, and pediatrics to address scientific issues related to preterm birth.
Eligibility: Proposals must have an interdisciplinary approach. One member of the team must have training and expertise outside the traditional areas of reproductive science. Proposals that cross institutional boundaries (partnerships between multiple universities or collaborations within larger universities) are encouraged. Accepting electronic applications only.

American Liver Foundation Liver Scholar Award
Deadline: December 5, 2012
Funding: Up to $225,000 over 3 years
Purpose: To support the research of young scientists to bridge the gap between completion of research training and attainment of status as an independent research scientist.
Eligibility: Applicant must apply within the first three years of his/her first faculty appointment and commence the award within the first four years of faculty appointment. Applicant must be an AASLD member in good standing by the award start date and maintain active membership for the duration of the award period.

American Federation for Aging Research- Julie Martin Mid-Career Award

Funding: $500,000 over 4 years
Purpose: To support mid-career scientists who propose new directions of high importance to biological gerontology.

American Federation for Aging Research- Research Grants
Deadline: December 17, 2012
Funding: Up to $100,000
Purpose: To assist in the development of the careers of junior investigators committed to pursuing careers in the field of aging research. Projects investigating age-related diseases are also supported, especially from the point of view of how basic aging processes may lead to these outcomes. Projects concerning mechanisms underlying common geriatric functional disorders are also encouraged.
Eligibility: The applicant must be an independent investigator with independent research space, and must be no more than 10 years beyond start of postdoctoral research training as of July 1, 2013.

American Federation for Aging Research- Glenn/AFAR Breakthroughs in Gerontology Award
Deadline: December 17, 2012
Funding: Up to $200,000 over 2 years
Purpose: To provide timely support to a small number of pilot research programs that may be of relatively high risk but which offer significant promise of yielding transforming discoveries in the fundamental biology of aging.
Eligibility: Full-time faculty members at the rank of Assistant Professor or higher. A strong record of independent publication beyond the postdoctoral level is a requirement. Applications from individuals not previously engaged in aging research are particularly encouraged.

ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE
American Federation for Aging Research- New Investigator Awards in Alzheimer's Disease
Deadline: December 14, 2012
Funding: Up to $50,000
Purpose: To support important research in areas in which more scientific investigation is needed to improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of Alzheimer's disease. The program also serves to encourage junior investigators in the United States and Israel to pursue research and academic careers in the neurosciences, and Alzheimer's disease in particular.
Eligibility: The applicant must be an independent investigator with independent research space as described in a form completed by the Dean or Department Chair, and must be no more than 10 years beyond start of postdoctoral research training as of July 1, 2013.

ARTHRITIS
Arthritis National Research Foundation (ANRF)
Deadline: January 18, 2013
Funding: Up to $75,000 for 1 year
Purpose: To fund individuals are seeking to discover new knowledge for the prevention, treatment, and cure of arthritis and other rheumatic diseases. Clinical and basic studies will be considered.
Eligibility: Priority will be given to investigators possessing an M.D. or Ph.D. degree or equivalent, affiliated with a qualified, nonprofit institution. Preference will be given to senior postdoctoral investigators transitioning to independent investigator status and new assistant professors. Applicant may not have (or ever had) an NIH R01 grant or equivalent.

CANCER RESEARCH
Alex's Lemonade Stand Epidemiology Awards

Funding: Up to $200,000 over two years
Purpose: To support the research of investigators who have a specific focus on the epidemiology, early detection or the prevention of childhood cancer.

The Mary Kay Foundation
Deadline: December 17, 2012 by 5:00 p.m. (internal Drexel deadline); the Foundation's deadline is February 4, 2013
Funding: Up to $100,000 for 2 years
Purpose: To fund translational research in ovarian, uterine, breast or cervical cancer, and to improve diagnosis, prognosis, prevention or treatment of cancer.
Eligibility: Only one nomination may be submitted, and so Drexel is holding an internal competition. Applicants should submit a 2-page research proposal and NIH style bio sketch to research@drexel.edu. The proposal page limit does not include references or a title page. Font may be no smaller than 11-point Arial. Please submit as a single PDF with the nominee's name in the title. The email subject line should contain the words Mary Kay Foundation.

Melanoma Research Alliance Team Science Awards
Deadline: January 11, 2013 (full proposals); must submit an LOI prior to deadline
Funding: Up to $1 million over 2-3 years
Purpose: To support projects with the potential to lead to transforming advances in prevention, early detection, staging and/or treatment of melanoma.
Eligibility: Each team must include at least one Young Investigator as a co-investigator (see and comply with all Young Investigator eligibility criteria above), who will receive up to $75,000/year. The Research Plan may include one Pilot Study embedded as an aim or sub-aim, which articulates a clear hypothesis and translational goals but is not supported by extensive preliminary data. Suggested duration and scope of Pilot Studies is $50,000/year for 1-2 years.

COSMOLOGY
The Peter and Patricia Gruber Foundation Cosmology Prize
Deadline: December 15, 2012 (nomination)
Funding: $500,000 prize
Purpose: Nominations for the Cosmology Prize are invited annually from the fields of astronomy, cosmology, mathematics, and the philosophy of science. Individuals, organizations, and institutions that are active in or have an appreciation for contemporary cosmological research and study may submit nominations. The prize will be awarded to an individual whose achievements have advanced society's understanding of the structure and evolution of the universe.

EDUCATION
Brady Education Foundation
Deadline: December 14, 2012 (Stage 1 Application)
Funding: Up to $400,000
Purpose: To promote collaboration between researchers and educators via the funding of research and program evaluations in early education.
The Brady Education Foundation funds two types of projects:
1. Evaluations of existing model programs
2. Innovative research on model development, including both efficacy and effectiveness studies
Eligibility: Foundation favors projects that bring researchers and service providers together to prove/ improve the effectiveness of early care and education environments for at-risk children, projects that leverage other funds, projects with potential to inform/ guide policy or funding decisions, and projects with time for researchers/evaluators/program providers to collaborate.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL CARE
Emergency Medicine Foundation Directed Team Grant Research Award
Deadline: January 11, 2013
Funding: $50,000
Purpose: To support work that arises from a true physician-nurse partnership in a clinical research area pertinent to the practice of emergency medicine.
Eligibility: The applicants must provide evidence of a true collaborative effort between physician and nurse professionals and must delineate the relative roles of the participants in terms of protocol development, data collection, and manuscript preparation.

Purpose: To promote and to provide improved education and research in the field of emergency medicine in order to improve the availability and quality of emergency medical treatment.
Eligibility: The principal investigator is recognized as an accomplished investigator in the area of study proposed, and must have proven ability to pursue independent research as evidenced by original research publications in peer-reviewed journals or funding from extramural sources. MEDICAL RESEARCH
Kessler Foundation's Joel A. DeLisa, MD Award for Excellence in Research and Education
Deadline: December 14, 2012
Funding: Up to $50,000
Purpose: To identify and reward the physician and/or scientist who has demonstrated a significant impact on the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation, particularly as it relates to the translation of research and education to patient care.
Eligibility: Applicants must be nominated by a second party who can attest to the individual's qualifications. The application must include a cover page and a concise two-page statement from the nominator that summarizes the impact the nominee has had on the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation, and why this individual should be considered for the award. The applicant's current curriculum vitae and two letters of recommendation must be included.

Terumo BCT International Blood Safety Innovation Award

Funding: Up to $100,000
Purpose: To support scientific and clinical research leading to new advances in blood safety in hematology, immunology, and other related fields, and to encourage the investigation of novel scientific ideas and new concepts, procedures, and/or methodologies that have the potential to substantially advance blood safety for the benefit of patients in need of transfusion support.

Muscular Dystrophy Association Research Grants Programs

Funding: Development grants- up to $60,000 per year; Funding levels for primary Research Grants are unlimited.
Purpose: To support research aimed at developing treatments for the muscular dystrophies and related diseases of the neuromuscular system.
Eligibility: Applicant must be an M.D. or Ph.D., a professor, associate Professor or assistant professor at an appropriate educational, medical or research institution, have an acceptable research plan for a specific disease in MDA's program, and have access to institutional resources necessary to conduct the proposed research project.

NEUROBIOLOGY
Whitehall Foundation- Research grants

Funding: $30,000-$75,000 over 2 to 3 years
Purpose: To assist dynamic areas of basic biological research that are not heavily supported by federal agencies or other foundations with specialized missions.
Eligibility: Research grants are available to established scientists of all ages working at accredited institutions in the United States. Applications will be judged on the scientific merit and the innovative aspects of the proposal as well as on the competence of the applicant. Robert Wood Johnson Public Health Services and Systems Research (P)

Purpose: To support innovation in wireless-related technology that provides an effective solution to a pressing need for under-resourced populations around the world.

Rudy Bruner Award for Urban Excellence

Funding: One Gold Medal of $50,000 and four Silver Medals of $10,000 will be awarded.
Purpose: To celebrate urban places distinguished by quality design and their social and economic contributions to American cities. Award winners offer creative place-making solutions that transcend the boundaries between architecture, urban design, and planning, and showcase innovative thinking about the nation's cities.
