AUTISM RESEARCH
Autism Speaks - High-Risk/High-Impact Autism Research Projects
Deadline: Rolling LOI
Funding: up to $100,000
Purpose: For "out of the box" autism research projects that open new avenues to understanding the causes, diagnosis, subtyping, prevention, treatment, and cure of autism spectrum disorders. Grants awarded to support small investigator-initiated high-risk/high-impact projects that are potentially transformative and/or aim to overcome significant roadblocks in autism research within a twelve-month period. In particular Autism Speaks is seeking projects that may be too risky for regular research mechanisms. Funding restricted to projects that identify risk factors for ASD that can lead to prevention and improved diagnosis and treatment; lower the age at which ASD is detected and improve access to early intervention for children with ASD; enhance quality of and access to medical care for individuals with ASD; promote the development of safe, effective interventions and medicines to reduce core and associated symptoms of ASD throughout an individual's lifespan; and improve the health and outcomes of adults with ASD from a lifetime perspective.
Eligibility: Must hold full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty appointments or equivalent full-time non-tenure track appointments at accredited academic, medical, or research institutions.
Simons Foundation for Autism – Explorer Awards
Deadline: Accepted on a rolling basis
Funding: $60,000, including indirect costs, one year, non-renewable
Purpose: To support exploratory experiments that will strengthen hypotheses and lead to the formulation of competitive applications for subsequent larger-scale funding by SFARI or other organizations. Applications are encouraged from investigators who are new to the field of autism, but who have expertise that could be brought to bear on this complex disorder
Eligibility: All applicants and collaborators must hold a Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent degree and have a faculty position or equivalent at a college, university, medical school or other research facility.

BLOOD RESEARCH
Society for the Advancement of Blood Management-Haemonetics Research Starter Grant
Deadline: August 1, 2013
Funding: $20,000 one-year Patient Blood Management grant
Purpose: To advance field of patient blood management by supporting a young investigator who intends to study methods of promoting blood conservation. Provides starter funding to further scientific inquiry and clinical knowledge in the field of patient blood management. Preferencegiven to junior faculty advised by experienced mentor. Aims for results that can be used as pilot data or preliminary findings to support future grant applications focused on methods to improve blood management and to promote blood conservation. Areas of research considered are Process Improvement: Anemia management, blood conservation (preventing transfusion overuse, education, transfusion guidelines), cost/benefit analysis, point of care testing, blood utilization data collection and presentation; Scientific Inquiry: Pharmaceutical advances, surgical technology, blood salvage, physiology, pharmacology as it relates to patient blood management, point of care testing (thromboelastography and/or platelet mapping), outcome data in relation to blood utilization and blood conservation.
Eligibility: All applicants will be members of SABM, or become members of SABM for at least one year. Open fellows and junior faculty (three years or less out of training and at a rank no higher than Assistant Professor). Also open to nurses, pharmacists, perfusionists, and blood management or bloodless program coordinators.

HERA Women’s Cancer Foundation Sean Patrick Multidisciplinary Collaborative Grant
Deadline: June 3, 2013
Funding: $50,000
Purpose: Funds a project focused on the cause, early detection, treatment, and/or understanding of ovarian cancer. Annual award supports a cross-disciplinary project that is collaborative in nature. Application must identify two (or more) scientists with different yet complementary skills and explain how skills will be synergistic in addressing the ovarian cancer problem. Reliable Cancer Therapies – Repurposing of Drugs
Deadline: June 28, 2013 at 8am GMT (initial proposal); September 13, 2013 (more detailed proposal).
Funding: €300,000 total across 3 yrs
Purpose: Repurposing existing drugs for cancer treatment. The drugs must have been developed and approved for other indication(s). Relevant clinical trial endpoints (cancer survival & tumor response) should be the primary research assessments. Reliable Cancer Therapies (RCT) is a non-profit organization based in Switzerland that provides research-based information on cancer therapies and selectively funds the development of promising therapies. RCT also promotes collaborative research projects between researchers at different universities and/or organisations.

American College of Cardiology Foundation/Merck Research Fellowships in Cardiovascular Disease

Funding: $70,000 to be used for salary support, for one year of research to begin July 1, 2014
Purpose: Recipients will be expected to pursue a full-time project in clinical research during their year of supported training. Proposals addressing CVD and Cardiometabolic disorders are encouraged. Including pathophysiology, molecular genetics, metabolic abnormalities leading to cardiovascular disease, hypertension, heart failure, hyperlipidemia, inflammatory mechanisms and new pathways for drug discovery. Proposals focusing on clinically relevant outcomes as a result of the metabolic syndrome, diabetes or obesity are also encouraged. Outcomes studies should focus on clinical/and or systems of care (e.g., quality improvement) interventions, and use outcomes measures of importance to both patients and society, including mortality, significant morbidity or quality of life changes, or economic effects.

EPILEPSY
American Epilepsy Society Seed Grant Program
Deadline: June 29, 2013
Funding: A max of 5 one-year grants of $20,000 each will be awarded annually. Non-renewable.
Purpose: To foster collaborative interactions between two or more established investigators* to make future grants related to epilepsy more competitive for larger awards, and to fuel multi-investigator projects. Small awards are designed to enable information exchange/technology transfer, travel of postdoctoral fellows between laboratories, and modest supplies for the project.
Eligibility: At least one PI must be an active member of the Society; Must be a new initiative that will add value to the field or fill a gap in knowledge; Techniques in a collaborative effort must be complementary; Must involve two or more established investigators, at least one of which is an epilepsy-focused investigator. American Epilepsy Society (AES) Research Initiative Awards: Grants for Innovative, Collaborative Research

Funding: $30,000 – $50,000
Purpose: AES has established a novel grant opportunity for its membership that will provide seed support to encourage innovative basic or clinical research associated with the epilepsy field. Thrasher Research Fund Early Career Awards

Funding: Maximum of $25,000 in direct costs, plus 7% direct costs
Purpose: Supports a variety of research topics important to children's health. Both incidence and severity are considered when determining the significance of a problem being studied. The Fund is particularly interested in applicants that show great potential to impact the field of children's health through medical research. Both an applicant's aptitude and inclination toward research are considered. The quality of the mentor and the mentoring relationship are also considered to be important predictors of success.
Eligibility: 1. Physicians who are in a residency/fellowship training program, or who completed that program no more than one year before the date of submission of the Concept Paper.
2. Post-doctoral researchers who received the doctoral level degree no more than three years prior to the date of submission of the Concept Paper.

Purpose: Fellowship is a career development award intended to support and encourage gifted young surgeons who choose careers in investigation and academic surgery. During the fellowship years, the awardee should have a primary role in research and teaching. It is expected that the fellow will have a faculty position following the fellowship in the department of surgery of the sponsoring institution. Primary consideration will be given to applicants who have previously had relevant research experience.
Eligibility: PhD., MD, other professional. Be a citizen or permanent resident of the US or Canada and have an M.D. or equivalent medical degree. Must have completed an ACGME-approved residency in general surgery or a surgical specialty and hold a faculty appointment in an accredited medical school or a similar medical institution. Application must be submitted within five years from the time that the applicant has completed their residency. All candidates must have completed an NIH-certified course in research ethics or plan to do so within the first year of the fellowship award. The fellowship is meant to support young investigators who have not been funded by NIH. Acceptance of other career development or fellowship awards such as the NIH K08 Career Development Award or the American Cancer Society (ACS) Mentored Research Scholar Grant precludes application for the ASAF Fellowship.
