AUTISM

Autism Speaks Family Service Community Grants
Deadline:  April 8, 2012 (LOI)
Funding:  Up to $25,000
Purpose:  The focus of these grants will be on proposals that serve to build the field of services for individuals with autism and expand the capacity to effectively serve this growing community.
Eligibility:  Grant proposals must address one of the following areas of need:  Education, Recreation/Community Activities, and Young Adult/Adults Services. Autism Speaks Family Services Community Grants will partner with other organizations to provide additional funding for projects that match our objectives. Autism Speaks Treatment Research

Deadline:  May 2, 2012
Funding:  up to $300,000
Purpose:  Autism Speaks invites grant applications to conduct innovative clinical studies of evidence-based therapies and novel treatment approaches for children and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). These may include complementary and alternative forms of health care; pharmacological and/or behavioral treatments; and evaluation of the efficacy, safety, or therapeutic benefits of interventions.
Eligibility:  Investigators holding full or part-time faculty appointments, professional affiliations or equivalent at accredited academic, medical, osteopathic, chiropractic, research, or educational institutions are eligible to apply. Applications will not be accepted from individuals or proprietary organizations to support the research and development of products or treatments for profit.  Applicants are restricted to one proposal per review cycle as Principal Investigator.

Simons Foundation - Autism Research Initiative Explorer Awards

Deadline:  Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
Funding:  Up to $60,000 including 20% indirect costs.
Purpose:  To support exploratory experiments aimed at improving the diagnosis and treatment of autism spectrum disorders that will strengthen hypothesis and attract follow-on funding.

BRAIN TUMORS

National Brain Tumor Society, Innovation Research Grant
Deadline:  Letter of Intent on a rolling basis.  Submit by June 9 for next review.
Funding:   $300,000 ($150,000 per year for two years.) No more than five projects will be funded per year. No Indirect Costs.
Purpose:   For transformative or catalytic scientific research projects that will significantly move the field forward toward effective brain tumor therapies. Grants respond to the brain tumor community's need for a rapid review process to support highly innovative research projects including those that are "out-of-the-box." Will fund projects that highlight innovative research strategies and will support the development of novel brain tumor therapies for adult and/or pediatric brain tumor patients. No set amount of preliminary data is required and research may fall within any stage of the research and development continuum. Grants available for research conducted globally.

CANCER RESEARCH

ACS Research Scholar Grants in Cancer Control:  Psychosocial and Behavioral Research
Deadline:  April 2, 2012 (Application)
Funding:   Up to $2 million over five years (plus 20 percent indirect costs)
Purpose:   Provide support for investigator-initiated research projects in psychosocial and behavioral research, including epidemiologic approaches to psychosocial and behavioral research.
Eligibility:  PhD., MD, other professional.  At the time of application, must be US citizens, noncitizen nationals, or permanent residents of the US.  Principal investigators who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents working at a not-for-profit institution in the United States may request under special circumstances, that a component of the research be performed at a foreign institution as a subcontract.

Purpose:   For mentored research and training to full-time junior faculty, typically within the initial four years of their first independent appointment. For beginning investigators to become independent researchers as either clinician scientists or cancer control and prevention researchers.

ACS Postdoctoral Fellowship

Deadline:  Apr 01, 2011
Funding:   Progressive stipends, 3 yrs:  $44,000, $46,000, $48,000/yr; plus $4,000/yr allowance.
Purpose:   To provide initial funding leading to an independent career in cancer research (including basic, preclinical, clinical, cancer control, psychosocial, behavioral, epidemiology, health services, and health policy research). During the second or third year of the award, ACS Postdoctoral Fellows will be invited to attend a Fellows Symposium to present their work, meet with senior leaders in cancer research, develop additional professional skills important in transition to independent research careers.

ACS Physician Training Awards in Cancer Prevention

Deadline:  April 2, 2012 (full proposal)
Funding:  Up to $1.2 million over four years
Purpose:  To support physician training in accredited preventive medicine residency programs that provide cancer prevention and control research and practice opportunities. To encourage and assist the development of promising individuals who are pursuing careers in preventive medicine. To create a cadre of preventive medicine specialists who are expert in cancer prevention and control, with the potential to become leaders in research, education, and intervention in this area. To support physicians in accredited residency programs that will lead to eligibility for certification in preventive medicine; such programs must provide cancer prevention and control research and practice opportunities. 
Eligibility:  Sponsoring institution must commit support for clinical, research, and where appropriate, teaching activities of the candidate. ACS Cancer Control Career Development Awards for Primary Care Physicians

Funding:  Up to $300,000 over three years
Purpose:  Support primary care physicians in supervised programs intended to develop clinical and teaching expertise and capacity to perform independent research or educational innovation in cancer control.
Eligibility:  Sponsoring institution must commit support for the clinical, research, and where appropriate, teaching activities of the candidate. Avon Foundation for Women:  2012 Avon Foundation Research Program

Funding:   $300,000 max over 2 years
Deadline:  April 2, 2012 (LOI)
Purpose:   The Avon Foundation for Women continues to seek new preventive strategies to address the growing number of breast cancer cases around the globe.  To develop new strategies to prevent breast cancer we need to understand the causes of breast cancer in women, changes in breast cells that give rise to cancer, markers for disease, and how breast cancer progresses.  The 2012 Avon Foundation Research Program seeks proposals in these areas to advance understanding of causes of breast cancer and prevention. 
Note:  do not support discovery research; rather, direct funds to validation, translation or clinical application of markers. 
Eligibility:  May not be used to fund studies involving animals. Progressive research is undertaken at a cellular level, with human tissue, or through other research modalities that do not require the use of animals, and these are the studies to which we direct our funds. Guidelines apply only to studies funded by the Avon Foundation and do not impact other research underway at these same institutions.

The OneBreath® Clinical Research Award in Lung Cancer

Deadline:  May 4, 2012         
Funding:  $100,000 over 2 years
Purpose:  Supports a project in lung cancer research that leads to improved treatment of lung cancer and is based on clinical/translational research and not basic or bench level research.

CHILDREN’S HEALTH

The World of Children Health Award
Deadline:  April 1, 2012
Funding:  Up to $50,000
Purpose:  The World of Children Health Award will provide up to $50,000 to an individual who has made a significant contribution to children in the fields of health, medicine, or the sciences. This person will have created or managed a sustainable program that has significantly contributed to the health and well-being of children.
EligibilityNominees must have been working on behalf of children over and above their normal employment and have been engaged in their efforts for a minimum of ten years.

CRITICAL CARE MEDICINE

Eli Lilly and Company - Distinguished Scholar in Critical Care Medicine
American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP)/CHEST Foundation
Deadline:  May 4, 2012
Funding:  $150,000 (3 years)
Purpose:  To support a Fellow of the ACCP (FCCP) whose project will focus on the following:  establishing an identity for the diagnosis and management of diseases within a critical care environment; promoting alternatives for critical care treatment; educating patients about options for diagnosis and management; educating and disseminating new knowledge about diagnosis and treatment within a critical care environment; addressing family, legislative, and regulatory issues; and defining new funding mechanisms leading to improved critical care. Scholar will create, manage, and evaluate projects over the 3-year timeframe of his/her term as the Distinguished Scholar.
Eligibility:  Be an FCCP and hold the degree of:  MD, DO, MBChB, MBBCh, MBBS, DNSc, Pharm D, PhD, or EdD. Be a recognized clinician and/or scientist with a specialty in critical care as evidenced by publications, presentations, and/or peers. Be diligent in writing quarterly progress reports and participating in quarterly conference calls with members of the review committee during the 3-year duration of his/her project.

Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America - Senior Research & Career Development Awards

Funding:  Up to $117,000 for 1 to 3 years, plus indirect costs
Purpose:  For Senior Research Awards and Career Development Awards, to provide established researchers with funds to generate sufficient preliminary data to become competitive for funds from other sources such as NIH.

Cystic Fibrosis Foundation - Clinical Research Awards

Deadline:  Jun 01, 2011 Letter of Intent
Funding:   $300,000 to $675,000.  Up to $100,000/year for up to 3 years for single-center clinical research grants. For multi-center clinical research, up to $225,000/year up to 3 years. 
Purpose:  Support to clinical research projects directly related to Cystic Fibrosis (CF) treatment and care. Projects may address diagnostic or therapeutic methods related to CF or the pathophysiology of CF. The John Merck Fund - Developmental Disabilities Translational Research Program
Deadline:  May 15, 2012
Funding:  $250,000 each year for 4 years
Purpose:  Developmental Disabilities Translational Research Program will support researchers in developing treatments and improving outcomes for individuals with developmental disabilities, particularly Down syndrome and Fragile X syndrome (and FX associated disorders). 
Eligibility:  Academic rank in a university or medical school, or equivalent standing in a research institute or medical center.  Applicants should have a record of research in areas relating to developmental disabilities. FAMILY MEDICINE

American Academy of Family Physicians Foundation - Joint Grant Awards Program (JGAP) 
Deadline:  June 1; (Also accept proposals Dec 1)
Funding:   $30,000 to $50,000 (may ask for less for small-scale projects)
Purpose:  Research that poses questions of high relevance to Family Medicine. Program goals:

  • Support research of value to the practicing family physician
  • Encourage proposals by junior investigators
  • Fund pilot studies

Eligibility:  Individual family physicians, Family Medicine organizations or associations, Family Medicine residency programs, Departments of Family Medicine, Educational and health care institutions or organizations that will use the JGAP support exclusively for research projects directly involving and impacting Family Medicine.  JGAP encourages the submission of proposals for which a family physician is the principal investigator. In addition, priority will be given to new researchers or those who mentor new investigators on the research team. Some requests DO NOT qualify:  cost instituting programs; costs for videotape production, curriculum design or implementation of a project, etc.  PI or one of co-investigators must be a member of AAFP. PI must be a Family Medicine researcher (a clinician or PhD), the one individual designated by the applicant organization to direct the project. Multiple proposals can be submitted, but each proposal must be for a separate and unique project.

HEALTHCARE RESEARCH

GlaxoSmithKline - IMPACT Awards
Deadline:  March 28, 2012
Funding:  Up to $40,000
Purpose:  IMPACT Awards acknowledge, highlight, and reward excellence in the nonprofit healthcare community. Focus attention on nonprofit organizations that have a significant impact in their communities’ access to healthcare and are capable, proactive, committed, and effective in their work.
Eligibility:  The individuals who complete the application on behalf of the nonprofit must be knowledgeable about the complexities and challenges of access to healthcare in their communities and about their organization’s related accomplishments. Organizations should be in Berks, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Lancaster, Lehigh, Montgomery, Northampton or Philadelphia Counties in Pennsylvania and the City of Camden in New Jersey will be awarded $40,000 each.

HEMATOLOGY

American Society of Hematology - Junior Faculty Scholar Award
Deadline:  May 1, 2012 (LOI)
Funding:  $150,000 for 2-3 years
Purpose:  Designed to support hematologists who have chosen a career in research by providing partial salary or other support during that critical period required for completion of training and achievement of status as an independent investigator.
Eligibility:  To be eligible for the Junior Faculty Scholar Award (either basic or clinical/translational research), applicants must be within the first three years of their initial faculty appointment as of July 1, 2012. LUPUS

Lupus Research Institute - Novel Research Grant Program
Deadline:  May 31, 2012
Funding:  Up to $100,000 per year, up to 3 years
Purpose:  Invites applications for financial support for research projects relevant to basic, translational or clinical investigation in lupus. Applications will be judged on novelty of the hypotheses, scientific quality, strength of approach, relevance to lupus, and likelihood of success.
Eligibility:  Both established and new investigators may apply. While the Institute encourages projects based on novel explorations of human lupus biology, projects solely based on cellular, molecular, and/or animal models are also encouraged.

National Niemann-Pick Disease Foundation - Peter G. Pentchev Research Fellowship

Alpha-1 Foundation and The CHEST Foundation - Clinical Research Award

Purpose:  Supports research focused on COPD and AAT deficiency. Research projects primarily in usual COPD (not associated with AAT deficiency) are allowed. Projects with a focus on AAT deficiency are encouraged.

W. W. Smith Charitable Trust - Medical Research Award (
Cancer and AIDS Research)
Deadline:  June 15, 2011 (proposal)
Funding:   $150,000 (Approximate)
Purpose:  To help medical researchers pursue breakthroughs that will immeasurably improve our lives. Funds basic medical research in the areas of Heart, Cancer and AIDS. The Trust highlights the importance of basic medical research in the area of Juvenile Diabetes and continues to provide funds for finding a cure. The philosophy has been not to replicate governmental funding organizations, but identify and fund projects that are unique and meritorious. The Trust tries to select promising researchers who have the potential to attract the NIH or other large funding organizations after the Trust’s support. There is a strong commitment to encourage new or less recognized investigators to apply for funding. Grants have generally been for basic medical research for faculty with appointments in universities, hospitals and research centers in the Delaware Valley.

MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society Pilot Research Grants
Deadline:  New applications accepted on an ongoing basis.
Funding:  Maximum of $40,000 in direct costs for one year, plus 10% indirect costs.
Purpose:   Funds high-risk pilot grants to quickly test novel ideas, provides 1 year funds to test innovative, cutting-edge ideas or untested methods and gather sufficient preliminary data to apply for longer-term funding. Supports fundamental as well as applied studies, non-clinical or clinical in nature, including projects in patient management, care and rehabilitation.
Eligibility:  Investigators at established research institutions may apply to this program. It is expected that the person indicated as the principal investigator in an application for a grant is the one who is personally and actively responsible for the conduct of the research and who is considered eligible by his or her institution to apply for a research grant. The principal investigator need not be a United States citizen.  Applications for Pilot Research Projects under the direction of, or that request stipends for, postdoctoral fellows or for graduate students will not be accepted. Pilot awards may not support dissertation work for a graduate student. Postdoctoral fellows are encouraged to apply for one of the Society's programs of research training.

MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY

Muscular Dystrophy Association Translational Research Infrastructure Grant (TRIG)
Deadline:  Apr 23, 2011 Letter of Intent  
Funding:   $75,000 per year/3 years (approximately)
Purpose:   To fund the development of infrastructure -- tools, techniques or services -- that will be of use to the neuromuscular disease research community for the purpose of therapy development. Need for the proposed infrastructure can be presented in the context of a specific research project or projects, but grant will ultimately be evaluated on the need for the infrastructure by the community at large, and on the applicant's specific plan for making this resource available to the community.  Examples of acceptable infrastructure projects include, but are not limited to, development of databases, core facilities (e.g., vector production, muscle imaging, drug screening), microarray chips, animal model resources, tissue repositories, and components of clinical research networks. 
Eligibility:  Applicant should be a professional or faculty member at an appropriate educational, medical or research institution who is qualified to conduct and supervise a program of original research. The applicant should hold a Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor of Science or equivalent.

Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation – Research Grants

Purpose:  To accelerate the development of therapeutic approaches for myeloma and may include proposals in basic science, validation, or translation research.

NEUROSCIENCES

Whitehall Foundation - Research Grants
Deadline:  April 15, 2012 (Letter of Intent)
Funding:  Up to $225,000 over three years.
Purpose:  To support basic research in neurobiology. Foundation's current focus is on invertebrate and vertebrate (excluding clinical) neurobiology, specifically investigations of neural mechanisms involved in sensory, motor, and other complex functions of the whole organism as these relate to behavior. Overall goal of the research should be to better understand behavioral output or brain mechanisms of behavior.
Eligibility:  Applicants must be assistant professors or productive senior scientists who wish to move into new fields of interest. They must dedicate a minimum of 20 percent of their time to the proposed project and have less than $200,000 of existing support.  Research should not be well supported by federal agencies or other foundations. Letters of intent must be sent by U.S. or other mail carrier (not email), and include a cover page and abstract of proposed research.

Mathematical & Physical Sciences:  innovative projects that focus on foundational questions in mathematics or that seek a deeper understanding of the nature of reality within the realm of physics, cosmology, astronomy, chemistry, or other physical sciences. Projects that are unlikely to be supported by conventional funding sources are especially encouraged.
3. Life Sciences:  projects investigating the evolution and fundamental nature of life, human life, and mind, especially as they relate to issues of meaning and purpose. Projects are welcome from a variety of disciplinary perspectives, including the biological sciences, neuroscience, archeology, and paleontology.
4. Science in Dialogue:  projects that bring one or more scientific disciplines into a mutually enriching discussion with theology and/or philosophy, whether for a scholarly audience or the public at large.

PAIN RESEARCH

Mayday Fund of New York, Pain Related Projects

Funding:   $25,000 to $400,000
Purpose:   The Mayday Fund is dedicated to alleviating the incidence, degree, and consequence of human physical pain. Grant-making targets include projects that result in clinical interventions to reduce the toll of physical pain, pediatric pain, pain in non-verbal populations, and pain in the context of emergency medicine.  Mayday will also continue to be proactive in its commitment to promote networking between veterinary and human medicine, especially to inform measurements of pain in nonverbal populations. Also, trustees wish to respond to special opportunities as presented.

PHARMACOLOGY

American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Young Investigator Award
Deadline:  May 12, 2011 Application
Funding:   $35,000 
Purpose:  Intended to support a fellow or junior faculty member in clinical pharmacology or related field who is engaged in clinical/translational research. ASCPT broadly defines clinical research to be investigation in clinical pharmacology that is hypothesis-driven research that is focused on drug discovery and molecular research, drug development, drug action and disposition, clinical trials, regulatory sciences, therapeutics and outcomes research. ASCPT's focus is on human-based research. The young investigator should spend at least 60 to 75 percent of his or her time in research during the award period.   
Eligibility:  PhD., MD, other professional. Citizenship or Residency Unrestricted. The applicant must be in a fellowship program focused on clinical pharmacology or must be within one year of the anniversary date of their faculty appointment. Applicant should be working in a lab or clinical research setting. Applicants should be planning an investigative career in clinical pharmacology.

PREECLAMPSIA

Preeclampsia Foundation, Vision Grant Award Program
Deadline:  May 18, 2012 (Full Proposal)
Funding:  $25,000, indirect costs not covered.  
Purpose:   To provide initial funding for innovative ideas focused on the pathophysiology, diagnosis or treatment of preeclampsia, HELLP syndrome and other hypertensive disorders of pregnancy that might otherwise not be pursued due to lack of funding. All novel, well-considered research topics are encouraged. Careful development of hypothesis based on existing information is expected. Although these awards are ideal for young investigators, they are not limited to young investigators.  Should be directed towards novel rather than well-established lines of research, and/or have the near-term potential for clinical application. Special consideration given to ideas to stop preventable death and disability of mothers and babies by eliminating delays in diagnosis or implementation of known practices, developing new practices, and helping women and families through the impact of preeclampsia. Consideration also be given to health services research focused upon the improvement of health care delivery such that improved outcomes are attained.

Purpose:  To provide support to academicians interested in careers focused on gerontology and the geriatric aspects of rheumatology during the early stages of their research career.

Purpose:  Quality of Life Grants are awarded to innovative rehabilitation and recreation programs as well as educational opportunities that improve the quality of life for people living with spinal cord injuries throughout the United States.

SURGERY

American Surgical Association Foundation (ASAF), Fellowship
Deadline:  Jun 15, 2011 Full Proposal
Funding:   $75,000 per year, renewable.
Purpose:   Fellowship is a career development award intended to support and encourage gifted young surgeons who choose careers in investigation and academic surgery. During the fellowship years, the awardee should have a primary role in research and teaching. It is expected that the fellow will have a faculty position following the fellowship in the department of surgery of the sponsoring institution.  Primary consideration will be given to applicants who have previously had relevant research experience. 
Eligibility:  PhD., MD, other professional.  Be a citizen or permanent resident of the US or Canada and have an M.D. or equivalent medical degree. Must have completed an ACGME-approved residency in general surgery or a surgical specialty and hold a faculty appointment in an accredited medical school or a similar medical institution. Application must be submitted within five years from the time that the applicant has completed their residency. All candidates must have completed an NIH-certified course in research ethics or plan to do so within the first year of the fellowship award. The fellowship is meant to support young investigators who have not been funded by NIH. Acceptance of other career development or fellowship awards such as the NIH K08 Career Development Award or the American Cancer Society (ACS) Mentored Research Scholar Grant precludes application for the ASAF Fellowship.
