Deadline: March 8, 2012 (LOI)
Funding: $600,000 over 4 years
Purpose: The Ellison Medical Foundation Senior Scholar program is designed to support established investigators working at institutions in the U.S. to conduct research in the basic biological and basic biomedical sciences relevant to understanding lifespan development processes and age-related diseases and disabilities.

ARTHRITIS

Arthritis Foundation New Investigator Awards
Deadline: February 6, 2012 at 5 p.m.
Funding: $50,000 per year for up to 2 years
Purpose: New Investigator Awards are intended to provide the support for young Arthritis Health
Professionals such as physical therapists as they initiate independent research related to arthritis. Suitable studies include, but are not limited to, functional, behavioral, nutritional, occupational, or epidemiological aspects of patient care and management.
Eligibility: New Investigator Grants are designed for individuals with a doctoral degree and demonstrated research experience related to arthritis and/or the care of patients with arthritis or education relevant to arthritis. Candidates must have membership or eligibility for membership in professional organizations.

ASTHMA RESEARCH

American Asthma Foundation
Deadline: February 8, 2012, at 5 p.m.
Funding: $450,000 over 3 years for Early Excellence Awards; $750,000 over 3 years for Senior Investigator Awards
Purpose: The Foundation seeks to support highly innovative research in asthma and to draw outstanding investigators from other fields into the study of asthma. The proposed work should be directed towards uncovering basic mechanisms in the pathogenesis of asthma. The ultimate goal is to find new approaches to prevent, treat and cure asthma.
Eligibility: Early Excellence Awards recipients will have already established an independent research program; hold a full-time academic appointment as an Assistant Professor, early Associate Professor, or the equivalent; and will have national-level, independent funding.Senior Investigator Awards recipients will have well-established research programs and an international reputation for their research. They will usually hold a full-time academic appointment as Professor, Associate Professor, or the equivalent.

BIOETHICS

2012 Pfizer Fellowships in Bioethics
Award: $100,000 over 2 years
Deadline:  February 11, 2012
Purpose:  Provides an opportunity for researchers to explore ethical issues that arise in the everyday practice of contemporary medicine. Institutions interested in this fellowship program should submit research proposals for programs and initiatives centered on issues such as doctor-patient confidentiality, genetic testing, stem cell research, professional boundaries, conflicts of interest, informed consent for treatment and research, and end-of-life care.
Eligibility:  Prospective fellows at the institution CANNOT apply directly for the award. Fellow may assist the senior staff, division head or department chair at the institution in the development of the grant application
Must have the opportunity to carry out supervised biomedical or clinical research with the primary objective of preparing them for their respective discipline and subspecialty. Upon receipt of the grant award, the Fellow selected by the Institution must meet the following criteria: US citizen or foreign national with permanent US residence; Hold an advanced degree (i.e., MD, DO, NP, PharmD, etc.); Be enrolled in fellowship program (Clinical award recipients); Hold a non-tenured, junior faculty appointment (Research award recipients).

Burroughs Wellcome Fund, Institutional Program Unifying Population and Laboratory Based Sciences
Deadline: February 15, 2012 at 4 p.m. (pre-proposal)
Funding: $2,500,000 over 5 years
Purpose: The Burroughs Wellcome Fund’s Institutional Program Unifying Population and Laboratory Based Sciences (PUP) is an institutional training award created to bridge the gap between the population and computational sciences and the laboratory based biological sciences. The award will stimulate formation of new connections between existing concentrations of research strength in population approaches to human health and in bench based biological sciences.

Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP)
Deadline: March 28, 2012 (LOI)
Funding: $1,350,000 over 3 years
Purpose: The HFSP supports innovative basic research into fundamental biological problems with emphasis placed on novel and interdisciplinary approaches that involve scientific exchanges across national and disciplinary boundaries. There are two types of grants: Young Investigators' Grants are for teams of scientists who are all within five years of establishing an independent laboratory and within 10 years of obtaining their Ph.D.s. Program Grants are for independent scientists at all stages of their careers, although the participation of younger scientists is especially encouraged.
Eligibility: Teams must include two to four members, with not more than one member from any one country, unless critical for the interdisciplinary nature of the project. Where two or more team members are from the same country they may establish a local or national interdisciplinary collaboration as a component of an international team, and will be considered as 1.5 team members for budgetary purposes.

BOWEL DISEASE RESEARCH

Kenneth Rainin Foundation - Innovator Awards Program for Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Deadline:  Feb15, 2012 (Letter of Intent)
Funding:  Up to $100,000 over one year.
Purpose:  To support innovative research and encourage integrative cooperation across all disciplines in an effort to accomplish the Foundation's mission to end suffering from Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
Eligibility:  Applicants must be tenure track professors at any level from any scientific discipline. Interdisciplinary collaboration is strongly encouraged.
Additional Information:  The Kenneth Rainin Foundation supports "out-of-the-box" innovative research projects that are potentially transformative to efforts to diagnose, treat and/or cure Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
The Foundation supports projects that are in close alignment with its Awards Program criteria, which includes:
Innovation; Collaboration; Scientific merit; High potential for success; and Ineligible for funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) or other more traditional sources.

American Cancer Society – Research Professor Award

Funding:  Up to $400,000 over five years.
Purpose:  To support mid-career investigators who have made influential contributions that have changed the direction of basic cancer research.
Eligibility:  Must be at the time of application U.S. citizens, noncitizen nationals or permanent residents; and have obtained rank of full professor or equivalent; must not have held rank for more than 15 years.
Additional Information:  The American Cancer Society seeks to support and promote high impact and innovative cancer research across a wide range of discipline to meet critically important needs in the control of cancer.

Leukemia Research Foundation
Deadline: February 15, 2012
Funding: $100,000 for 1 year
Purpose: The Leukemia Research Foundation exclusively funds New Investigators - individuals beginning to establish their own laboratories that are no longer under the tutelage of a senior scientist mentor. Grants allow innovative scientists to act on their ideas, and try new procedures and experiments that will hopefully lead to significant breakthroughs.
Eligibility: New Investigators are considered to be within seven years of their first independent position. Years as a resident physician, fellow physician, or post-doctoral fellow are considered to be training years.  Investigators at the instructor level or similar position must include a letter from the department chair confirming their independence. Applicants with an NIH KO8 or K23 are eligible.

Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) -- Translational Research Program (TRP)
Deadline:  Letter of Intent due March 1, 2012 (3:00pm EST)
Full Application due March 15, 2012 (3:00pm EST)
Funding: Total $600,000 across 3 years, including $19,982 max. annual indirect costs
Purpose:  To foster collaboration between basic and clinical scientists and enhance transfer of basic research findings to clinical usefulness. Applications are sought proposing novel approaches to prevention, diagnosis or treatment of leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. Proposals should be based on molecular, cellular or integrated systems findings and be conceptually innovative. The application should have a clear plan for the clinical exploitation of studies proposed and results expected. This feature of the proposal will be an important consideration of review process. While work directed at a further elucidation and understanding of the fundamental cellular and molecular biology of neoplastic lymphohematopoietic cells is a research priority of LLS, the Translational Research Program is specifically intended for support of clinical work.

The Mary Kay Foundation

Purpose: The Foundation is currently accepting applications for innovative grants for translational research in ovarian, uterine, breast, or cervical cancer.

James S. McDonnell Foundation

Funding: $450,000 over 3-6 years
Purpose: The Foundation is interested in supporting novel research that will generate new knowledge leading to increased rates of survival and improved functional recovery for individuals with brain cancer. All proposals submitted to the foundation must clearly link the experimental models and questions to the realities of human disease. Proposals from junior faculty and from individuals with strong neuroscience, genetics, mathematics, molecular pathology, and tumor immunology backgrounds, interested in pursuing novel research on brain cancer, are encouraged.

Prostate Cancer Foundation

Funding: $1 million over 2 years
Purpose: Research with a high probability of near-term patient benefit is required in the following topic areas: translational research in metabolism/adiposity/nutrition/survivorship; molecular imaging in both primary and metastatic disease; co-targeting tumor microenvironment; first-in-field research on new targets in metastatic disease systemic treatment; mechanisms of resistance to new treatments for advanced prostate cancer; and diagnostics/biomarkers that differentiate indolent from metastatic prostate cancer.

Sohn Conference Foundation and Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation
Deadline: March 15, 2012
Funding: $50,000-$60,000
Purpose: The Pediatric Cancer Research Fellowship will provide funding to basic scientists and clinicians for research with the potential to significantly impact the prevention, diagnosis, or treatment of one or more pediatric cancers. Fellowships are granted for a three-year term with second- and third-year funding contingent upon satisfactory progress reports. Fellowships provide annual stipends of $50,000 or $60,000 and annual expense allowances of $2,000.
Eligibility: Candidates must apply for the fellowship under the guidance of a sponsor — a scientist (tenured, tenure-track, or equivalent position) capable of providing mentorship to the fellow.

Sontag Foundation Distinguished Scientist Awards

Funding: up to $600,000 over 4 years
Purpose: The Sontag Foundation is looking for early career scientists with the potential to create new waves across the brain cancer field, increasing survival rates and improving recovery for patients. The Foundation seeks a cure or treatments to make brain cancer a manageable chronic disease.
Eligibility: Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in a biomedical science, medicine, or other health-related field. CARDIAC ELECTROPHYSIOLOGY RESEARCH

Heart Rhythm Society – Research Fellowships
Deadline:  January 20, 2012 by 5:00 p.m.
Funding:  Up to $50,000
Purpose:  To support individuals interested in clinical and basic research relating to the latest advances in electrophysiology.  Appropriate fields of study include: epidemiological, community, clinical and basic investigations within the general area of cardiac electrophysiology.
Eligibility:  Applicants must hold an M.D., Ph.D., or equivalent degree and should not be enrolled in a graduate or medical school as of June 2012. Applicants may not have completed three cumulative years of postmedical school or graduate school research. Applicant should be intent on pursuing a career in independent research and interested in additional training under the supervision of a sponsor or mentor prior to a career in independent research.  Sponsor should be a member of the Heart Rhythm Society by activation of the award (June 2012).

Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Guidance for Trainees

Funding: $30,000-$50,000 over 1 year
Purpose: The program supports demonstration projects that will model affordable approaches to improving trainees’ readiness for stable, fulfilling careers, whether by clarifying and improving their basic “Ph.D.-level” skills, by helping them identify how they can best use their skills and interests to serve the needs of potential employers, by providing them approaches to thinking through their career options, or by other strategies.

CEREBRAL PALSY RESEARCH

Cerebral Palsy International Research Foundation – Ethel & Jack Hausman Clinical Research Scholars

Funding: $225,000 over 3 years
Purpose: The objective of the Ethel & Jack Hausman Clinical Research Scholars Award is to assist institutions in the United States to recruit promising clinician-investigators early in their careers and to help in their establishment as focal points for scholarly activities in areas of direct relevance to cerebral palsy and related developmental brain disorders
Eligibility: Candidates for the Award will have completed their formal clinical and research training and will have recently completed between four to six years of post-doctoral medical training or two to four years of post-doctoral research training.

CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY

PhRMA Foundation – Faculty Development Award
Deadline:  February 1, 2012
Funding:  Up to $240,000 over two years (includes 8% in indirect costs).
Purpose:  To support and develop the potential of young investigators in order to meet workforce needs in the field of human clinical pharmacology.
Eligibility:  Must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, hold a Pharm.D., M.D., or Ph.D. degree and have a sponsored mentor. Should have at least two years of training at the residency level, and two years clinical experience in a research training program related to clinical pharmacology.  Foundation is particularly interested in providing support to applicants who are beginning a postdoctoral program and interested in a full-time career in human clinical pharmacology.

PhRMA Foundation Research Starter Grants -- Health Outcomes
Deadline:  February 1, 2012 (online)
Funding:  $60,000 for one year.
Purpose:  To offer financial support to individuals beginning their independent research careers at the faculty level.  Supports individuals beginning independent research careers in academia who do not have other substantial sources of research funding. Not offered as a means to augment substantially funded research efforts. Intended to offer support for researchers who are starting their independent research efforts.
Health Outcomes; Pharmacoeconomics; Patient Reported Outcomes
Eligibility:  Those holding the academic rank of instructor or assistant professor and investigators at the doctoral level with equivalent positions are eligible to apply for these research starter grants, providing their proposed research is neither directly nor indirectly subsidized to any significant degree by an extramural support mechanism. Not intended for those in postdoctoral training programs. However, individuals in unless finished and holding an academic appointment by January 1, 2012 may apply. Must be sponsored by the department or unit within which the proposed research is to be undertaken. Grant made to the university on behalf of applicant and with understanding that the university will administer the funds. Schools of medicine, pharmacy, public health, nursing, dentistry and schools of other areas where appropriate are eligible for this award.  All applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Purpose: The Complex Systems program supports scholarship and research directed toward the development of theoretical and mathematical tools that can be applied to the study of complex, adaptive, nonlinear systems. Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF)
Deadline: March 26, 2012 (Expression of Interest)
Funding: up to $1,050,000 over 3 years
Purpose: JDRF is encouraging collaborations among bioengineers, chemists, immunologists, transplant researchers, and pancreatic beta cell biologists to incorporate engineering concepts and designs into efforts toward improving islet encapsulation as a key component of cell replacement therapy for T1D.

EATING DISORDERS

Klarman Family Foundation Grants Program in Eating Disorders Research
Deadline: February 1, 2012 at noon
Funding: up to $150,000 over 1 year (pilot studies); $400,000 over 2 years (standard awards)
Purpose: The Klarman Family Foundation is interested in providing strategic investment in translational research that will accelerate progress in developing effective treatments for anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder. Clinical psychotherapeutic studies, medication trials and research in the medical complications of these disorders are outside the scope of this Program.
Eligibility: Investigators who previously submitted applications or have concluded their Klarman Family Foundation Award remain eligible to apply again in the 2012 cycle. Investigators who received One-Year Awards in 2011 may submit an application in the 2012 cycle for a Two-Year Award.

ASP-IDSA Young Investigator Award in Geriatrics 
Award: Two-year award of $150,000 (100,000 research grant & 50,000 career development award) 
Deadline: March 15, 2011
Purpose:  For young investigators who develop and implement a basic, clinical, or health services research project focused on a geriatric aspect of infectious diseases. Applicants must have applied for the GEMSSTAR award and received a fundable score as defined by the National Institutes of Health.
Eligibility:  Applicants and their sponsors must be members of IDSA. Junior faculty members only.  Must have a medical or equivalent doctoral level degree, and not more than 4 years out of a training program. Must be assured of a faculty position at a U.S. institution.

HEART DISEASE RESEARCH

American Heart Association National Scientist Development Grant
Deadline: January 26, 2012
Funding: $77,000 over 4 years
Purpose: The award supports highly promising beginning scientists in their progress toward independence by encouraging and adequately funding research projects that can bridge the gap between completion of research training and readiness for successful competition as an independent investigator. Focus is on research broadly related to cardiovascular function and disease and stroke, or to related clinical, basic science, bioengineering or biotechnology, and public health problems, including multidisciplinary efforts. Proposals are encouraged from all basic disciplines as well as epidemiological, behavioral, community and clinical investigations that bear on cardiovascular and stroke problems.
Eligibility: At the time of the application, must hold an M.D., Ph.D., D.O., D.V.M. or equivalent post-baccalaureate doctoral degree and meet institutional requirements for grant submission.
At the time of award activation (July 2012), the applicant must hold a faculty/staff position up to and including the rank of assistant professor (or equivalent). Applications may be submitted for review in the final year of a postdoctoral research fellowship or in the initial years of the first faculty/staff appointment. Also, no more than four years will have elapsed since an applicant's first faculty/staff appointment (after receipt of doctoral degree) at the assistant professor level or its equivalent (including, but not limited to, research assistant professor, research scientist, staff scientist, etc.).

INFECTIOUS DISEASE

IDSA Merle A. Sande/Pfizer Fellowship Award in International Diseases
Deadline:  March 15, 2011
Funding:  One-Year award of $60,000
Purpose:  To encourage young physicians who are interested in international medicine; given for important clinical research in infectious diseases or HIV conducted in a setting with limited resources.
Eligibility:  Applicants must be members of IDSA, enrolled in an accredited graduate training program in infectious diseases. 
Notes:  Selection criteria will include but not be limited to: applicant’s scholarship performance and professional qualifications; scientific merit of the proposed project, validity of the research rationale; adequacy of facilities to the applicant. Research must be conducted in resource-limited country as defined by World Bank (low- and low-middle-income countries).  Postdoctoral fellows who hold a comparable fellowship not eligible.

Astellas Young Investigator Awards
Deadline: March 15, 2011
Purpose:  Provide funding to young investigators who have demonstrated outstanding research in any area of current interest in the field of infectious diseases.
Award: One-year awards of $50,000 
Eligibility:  Applicants and their sponsors must be members of IDSA. Junior faculty members only.  Must have a medical or equivalent doctoral level degree, and not more than 4 years out of a training program. Must be assured of a faculty position at a U.S. institution.
Notes:  Selection of awardees includes consideration of each applicant’s commitment to: clinical and laboratory investigation, research program envisioned by the applicant ; creativity, originality, and excellence in prior performance.  Priority will be given to qualified investigators without active grant support.  Researchers with R01 grants are not eligible for Young Investigator Awards, but those with K grants may apply.

Pfizer Young Investigator Award in Vaccine Development
Deadline: March 15, 2011
Award: Two-year award of $60,000   
Purpose:  For outstanding research in vaccine development, either through clinical or laboratory investigation, to a candidate who demonstrates commitment to a career in vaccinology.  Must be conducting research or working in a recognized and accredited U.S. institution of higher learning or in a government agency.
Eligibility:  Applicants and their sponsors must be members of IDSA. Junior faculty members only.  Must have a medical or equivalent doctoral level degree, and not more than 4 years out of a training program. Must be assured of a faculty position at a U.S. institution.

Award: Two-year award of $150,000 (100,000 research grant & 50,000 career development award)

Purpose:  For young investigators who develop and implement a basic, clinical, or health services research project focused on a geriatric aspect of infectious diseases. Applicants must have applied for the GEMSSTAR award and received a fundable score as defined by the National Institutes of Health.

Funding:   $150,000 across 3 years max.
Purpose:   To support researchers in the US working to address critical issues that affect kidney diseases and their treatment. LUPUS RESEARCH

Alliance for Lupus Research (ALR), Functional Genomics and Molecular Genetic Pathways in SLE 
Deadline:  Application due to ALR by February 15, 2012
FundingApproved Research Grants will be eligible for a 2-year award of up to $350,000 (up to $175,000/year for 2 years).  Pilot Grants: Approved pilot grants will be eligible for a 1-year award of up to $75,000.  Pilot grants are for projects that are not supported by preliminary data.
Purpose:  Must focus on two principal areas: (1) functional validation to determine which candidate genes/variants identified in human lupus have an authentic role in the disease and (2) detailed elucidation of the molecular pathways modulated by these candidate genes/variants identified in human lupus. All proposals submitted must be based on information in the public domain. Responsive applications will propose research to elucidate the functional implications of the genetic variants identified in human lupus studies. Lupus-associated genes studied in animal models that are not among those also identified in human studies are not appropriate topics for this grant mechanism.
Eligibility:  open to investigators working at established research institutions (both for profit and not-for profit) as well as investigators at state health agencies, the FDA, VA and at intramural divisions of NIH.  Applications may be submitted by investigators working anywhere in the world.  Non-U.S. applicants whose projects involve human subjects must work at institutions that have human subjects committees that operate in a substantially similar manner to a U.S. Institutional Review Board.

International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM)

Funding: $25,000
Purpose: The Seed Grant Program emphasizes interdisciplinary research and M.D./Ph.D. collaboration. Focus in 2012 is on the topics of Outcome/Cost Effectiveness and Molecular & Cellular CNS Imaging.
Eligibility: The seed grant competition is only open to clinical and basic scientists at or just beyond the postgraduate, fellow and junior faculty levels working in Magnetic Resonance research in academia, industry, or research institutions.  Typical applicants are expected to have more than the equivalent of five years’ postdoctoral (e.g., Ph.D. or comparable) or three years of post-residency (e.g., M.D. or comparable) research. NEUROFIBROMATOSIS

Children's Tumor Foundation
Deadline: February 28, 2012
Funding: $25,000 (in vitro screens); $50,000 (in vivo screens); $75,000 (limited no. of advanced awards)
Purpose: The Children's Tumor Foundation Drug Discovery Initiative (DDI) Awards program supports early stage screening of candidate drug therapies for the treatment of neurofibromatosis (NF): NF1, NF2 and Schwannomatosis. DDI Awards provides support for in vitro screens and in vivo screens to test efficacy of candidate NF therapies in cell and animal models. If in vitro screens yield promising data, awardees may apply for subsequent in vivo funding to continue the research.

PEDIATRIC INFECTIOUS DISEASES


Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society Fellowship
Deadline:  February 3, 2012
Funding:   $45,000/year for two years
Purpose:   To help increase the pool of highly trained pediatric infectious disease clinical scientists and to stimulate scholarly basic and clinical research in the following areas pertinent to pediatrics: public health/epidemiology, hospital epidemiology, clinical trials of antimicrobials, outcomes research, pharmacokinetics, pathophysiology, molecular pathogenesis, research related to vaccine development, and other topics of relevance to pediatric infectious diseases. NOTE: The Society encourages applications for clinically applied/translational research.
Eligibility:  MD or MD/PhD and be at least a first-year fellow in a Pediatric Infectious Diseases program in North America at the time of application. The award will be given for two subsequent years of training; applicant expected to devote major portion (at least 75% of time) of those years conducting research project under the direct supervision of a mentor who must be a PIDS member in good standing for at least one year.

SPINAL CORD INJURY RESEARCH

Paralyzed Veterans of America Education Foundation – Research Utilization and Dissemination

Funding:  Up to $100,000 over two years.
Purpose:  To support investigators conducting projects in spinal cord injury or disease that translates research findings into practice.  Areas the Foundation plans to fund:
Consumer, Caregiver and Community Education – demonstration projects that seek to improve the health, independence and quality of life of individuals with spinal cord injury or disease (SCI/D);
Professional Development and Education – programs that improve the knowledge and competencies of professionals providing health care and related services to the SCI/D community; or
Fellowship programs for professionals providing health care and related services to the SCI/D community;
Research Utilization and Dissemination – projects that translate research findings into practice;
Assistive Technology – demonstration projects that improve the identification, selection, and use of assistive devices by people with SCI/D; and
Conference and Symposia – meetings that provide education and opportunities for collaboration among members of the SCI/D community
Eligibility:  Grantees must be located in the U.S. or Canada. However, project directors, staff and PIs are not required to be U.S. or Canadian citizens.

TUBERCULOSIS

Firland Foundation
Deadline:  Feb 28, 2012, LOI.  Mar 31, 2012, Application  
Funding:  Most grants range from $500 to $20,000, funded for a single year. No indirect costs. 
Purpose:  The Firland Foundation awards grants supporting work in a variety of programs primarily related to tuberculosis and secondarily to chronic lung disease, and small investigator-initiated research projects in the field of tuberculosis or other chronic lung diseases. The goal is to support research in its initial phase so that it grows to make a long-term, sustainable impact. Most projects directly relate to tuberculosis. Occasionally grants relate to other chronic lung diseases. New or pilot projects needing seed money, rather than ongoing program or project funding that could be covered by an established program budget. Projects that focus primarily on clinical care and outcomes rather than basic science and that focus on the medically underserved and/or economically disadvantaged.  Equipment relevant to respiratory assessment, respiratory care, the prevention of respiratory disease or the maintenance of respiratory health. (e.g. spirometers, oximeters, or other similar devices).  Projects with relatively modest budgets or that realistically can be completed within one to two years of funding.  Projects with established human subjects review approval or with little chance of an alternative source of funding.

Pfizer Young Investigator Award in Vaccine Development
Deadline: March 15, 2011
Purpose:  For outstanding research in vaccine development, either through clinical or laboratory investigation, to a candidate who demonstrates commitment to a career in vaccinology.  Must be conducting research or working in a recognized and accredited U.S. institution of higher learning or in a government agency.
