American Brain Tumor Association (ABTA) – Translational Grants and Basic Research Fellowships

Funding: $75,000 over 1 year (Translational Grants); $100,000 over 2 years (Basic Research Fellowships)
Purpose: Translational Grants help scientists further develop studies on the cusp of moving from the laboratory into patient testing, and often support the collection of the preclinical data researchers need to apply for major funding from other sources. Basic Research Fellowships are designed to encourage talented scientists early in their careers to enter, or remain in, the field of brain tumor research. The experience provides an opportunity in which young, bright, motivated investigators learn from motivating mentors. Applications will be accepted from a broad variety of disciplines such as basic sciences, radiation oncology, imaging, neurosurgery, neurology, pharmacology, immunology, etc. but the training opportunity must be specific to brain tumor research.
Eligibility: For Translational Grants: As of July 1, 2012 M.D.s must be within eight years of completion of their post-residency training, and hold a Faculty or Junior Faculty appointment or as of July 1, 2012 Ph.D.s must be within three to ten years of having received their doctorate, and hold a Faculty or Junior Faculty appointment. For Basic Research Fellowships: M.D.s must be within two years of residency completion or within five years of post-residency training as of July 1, 2012, or Ph.D.s will have their doctorate conferred by January 1, 2012 and will have no more than 5 years postdoctoral laboratory experience by July 1, 2012.

Caring for Carcinoid Foundation-AACR Grants for Carcinoid Tumor and Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumor Research

Purpose: To promote and support innovative cancer research. Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) -- Translational Research Program (TRP)

Funding: Total $600,000 across 3 years, including $19,982 max. annual indirect costs
Purpose: To foster collaboration between basic and clinical scientists and enhance transfer of basic research findings to clinical usefulness. Applications are sought proposing novel approaches to prevention, diagnosis or treatment of leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. Proposals should be based on molecular, cellular or integrated systems findings and be conceptually innovative. The application should have a clear plan for the clinical exploitation of studies proposed and results expected. This feature of the proposal will be an important consideration of review process. While work directed at a further elucidation and understanding of the fundamental cellular and molecular biology of neoplastic lymphohematopoietic cells is a research priority of LLS, the Translational Research Program is specifically intended for support of clinical work.

St. Baldrick’s Fellows: Foundation funds years 2-3 of a pediatric oncology research fellowship, with an opportunity for one additional year of funding. (Fellow’s salary & benefits only.) The foundation encourages applications from institutions with fellowship programs which have not previously received St. Baldrick’s funding.
St. Baldrick’s Scholars: Career development award is to help develop the independent research of highly qualified individuals still early in their careers. Grant: $110,000/year, 3 year min, with opportunity for two additional years. Award is for Scholar’s salary & benefits only; adjustments may be allowed if the Scholar receives other funds after the first year, upon Foundation approval.
Research grants: These one-year grants are for specific research projects which are hypothesis driven and may be either laboratory or clinical in nature. Please submit a realistic budget for the project; average grant will be $100,000 or less.
Supportive Care Research grants: For specific research projects which are hypothesis driven and focus on areas related to supportive care of children and adolescents with cancer. Examples include: studies related to symptom clusters, patient-reported outcomes/quality of life, health communication, health promotion, and psychosocial support across trajectory from diagnosis to survivorship or end-of-life care. Average grant will be $50,000.
CEREBRAL PALSY RESEARCH

PhRMA Foundation – Faculty Development Award

Funding: Up to $240,000 over two years (includes 8% in indirect costs).
Purpose: To support and develop the potential of young investigators in order to meet workforce needs in the field of human clinical pharmacology.
Eligibility: Must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, hold a Pharm.D., M.D., or Ph.D. degree and have a sponsored mentor. Should have at least two years of training at the residency level, and two years clinical experience in a research training program related to clinical pharmacology. Foundation is particularly interested in providing support to applicants who are beginning a postdoctoral program and interested in a full-time career in human clinical pharmacology.

Purpose: To accelerate medical research discoveries that will lead to improved therapies for anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Proposals must be focused on relevant aspects of the biological causes of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa as defined by clinical criteria. Research areas of interest include but are not limited to: neural pathways of feeding behavior in animal models; molecular genetic analysis of relevant neural circuit assembly and function; testing of new chemical compounds that might be used in animal models as experimental treatments; and brain imaging technologies that identify neurochemical pathways in patients with these disorders.

Purpose: To support individuals interested in clinical and basic research relating to the latest advances in electrophysiology. Appropriate fields of study include: epidemiological, community, clinical and basic investigations within the general area of cardiac electrophysiology.
Eligibility: Applicants must hold an M.D., Ph.D., or equivalent degree and should not be enrolled in a graduate or medical school as of June 2012. Applicants may not have completed three cumulative years of postmedical school or graduate school research. American Gastroenterological Association ‐ Takeda Research Scholar Award in Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

Purpose: For young investigators working toward independent careers in gastroenterology, hepatology, or related areas; to enable them to develop independent and productive research careers in digestive diseases by ensuring that a major proportion of their time is protected for research. Limited to research relevant to gastroesophageal reflux disease.
Eligibility: Candidates for this award must hold an MD, PhD or equivalent degree (e.g. MB, ChB, MBBS, DO) and a full‐time faculty position at a North American institution by July 1, 2012. AGA membership is required at the time of application submission. Established investigators are not appropriate candidates. For MD applicants: No more than 5 years following completion of clinical training (GI fellowship or its equivalent) and the start date of this award. PhD applicants: No more than 5 years following the PhD award and the start date of this award. Candidates must devote at least 70 percent of efforts to research related to the digestive system. Women and underrepresented minority applicants are strongly encouraged to apply. Physician/scientist/ investigators /candidates interested in translational research especially encouraged to apply. American Heart Association National Scientist Development Grant

Funding: $77,000 over 4 years
Purpose: The award supports highly promising beginning scientists in their progress toward independence by encouraging and adequately funding research projects that can bridge the gap between completion of research training and readiness for successful competition as an independent investigator. Focus is on research broadly related to cardiovascular function and disease and stroke, or to related clinical, basic science, bioengineering or biotechnology, and public health problems, including multidisciplinary efforts. Proposals are encouraged from all basic disciplines as well as epidemiological, behavioral, community and clinical investigations that bear on cardiovascular and stroke problems.
Eligibility: At the time of the application, must hold an M.D., Ph.D., D.O., D.V.M. or equivalent post-baccalaureate doctoral degree and meet institutional requirements for grant submission.
At the time of award activation (July 2012), the applicant must hold a faculty/staff position up to and including the rank of assistant professor (or equivalent). Applications may be submitted for review in the final year of a postdoctoral research fellowship or in the initial years of the first faculty/staff appointment. LUPUS RESEARCH
Alliance for Lupus Research (ALR) -- Functional Genomics and Molecular Genetic Pathways in SLE
Deadline: Application due to ALR by February 15, 2012
Funding: Approved Research Grants will be eligible for a 2-year award of up to $350,000 (up to $175,000/year for 2 years). Pilot Grants: Approved pilot grants will be eligible for a 1-year award of up to $75,000. Pilot grants are for projects that are not supported by preliminary data.
Purpose: Must focus on two principal areas: (1) functional validation to determine which candidate genes/variants identified in human lupus have an authentic role in the disease and (2) detailed elucidation of the molecular pathways modulated by these candidate genes/variants identified in human lupus. All proposals submitted must be based on information in the public domain. Responsive applications will propose research to elucidate the functional implications of the genetic variants identified in human lupus studies. Lupus-associated genes studied in animal models that are not among those also identified in human studies are not appropriate topics for this grant mechanism.

Purpose: The McKnight Endowment Fund for Neuroscience invites applications for the 2012 McKnight Scholar Awards. These awards were established to encourage emerging neuroscientists to focus on disorders of learning and memory. Applicants for the McKnight Scholar Awards must demonstrate interest in solving important problems in relevant areas of neuroscience, including the translation of basic research to clinical neuroscience.
Eligibility: Applicants must have the following:
- An M.D. and/or Ph.D. degree and have completed formal postdoctoral training;

Purpose: The ACR REF/AF Career Development Bridge Funding Award provides bridge funding for promising investigators as they are revising outstanding career development awards (i.e., NIH K08/K23 awards or VA CDA-2 awards). Through this bridge funding award, the REF plans to support young faculty members so that they have the highest likelihood of achieving success in obtaining longer term career development awards. This funding mechanism is consistent with the REF goal of helping to ensure the future of academic rheumatology.
Eligibility: Applicants must be ACR or ARHP members with an M.D., D.O., Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral level degree from an accredited institution, M.D./Ph.D.s and D.O./Ph.D.s are eligible to apply.
